The way points of this bicycle route:
begin at Garcia Bend Park (south Pocket-Greenhaven area)
bike to greenway/parkway/bike trail. generous bike network in Pocket neighborhood
bike along canal, watch for cross traffic on Rush River
take a left on bridge over canal to access main greenway/parkway in Pocket and to generally head north to downtown, other opportunities to cross over canal, however
watch for morning and late afternoon walkers
bike trail makes many turns, several forks in trail (generally head north toward bridges). there will be three bridges over main streets to avoid having to stop for cross traffic.
first bridge
first of two elementary schools smartly placed adjacent to greenway network.
second bridge, watch downhill speed
second school
tunnel under street, watch for blind corner coming out of other side
bike trail not a straight approach to bridge, tough to gain speed on approach of last bridge
approaching levee for Sacramento River.
on top of levee. Sacramento River Parkway gets you all the way into downtown. (interrupted by private property just ahead at "Little Pocket" area). will be able to cross over I-5 past Miller Park & Marina and spits you out at R St near 5th St downtown.
get off bike trail and onto Riverside Blvd (due to private ownership of levee at this section). follow Riverside north toward downtown (generous bike lane). due to Summer 2006 (and beyond) construction on parts of levee north of this point and south of downtown, must take Riverside all the way to downtown as Sacramento River Parkway is closed.
watch for cross traffic
watch for cross traffic from nearby freeway on-ramp and off-ramp (cross traffic does not stop, notice signs)
can meet up with Sacramento River Parkway at this point again, but due to construction project, access is closed. continue under freeway on Riverside Blvd
turn left to continue on Riverside Blvd
be wary of cars turning to access Sutterville Rd & I-5 freeway on-ramps & off-ramps. many cars do not yield to bikes
be especially careful here!
aw.... passing small stretch of William Land Park, start of beautiful old homes
cemeteries on the left
Target on the right, for any errands on the way home.
Riverside @ Broadway. be cautious of freeway-related traffic next few intersections. getting into downtown
freeway on-ramp nearby.
freeway off-ramp nearby
T St is start of uncontrolled cross traffic downtown
reached center of downtown, go where you need to go!
huge freeway abutment on right, beautiful landscaping
back on Sacramento River Parkway (levee)... enjoy the beautiful river!
last bridge, not a very straight approach.
back at Garcia Bend Park (in south Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood)
