The way points of this bicycle route:
Starting from Railway Street. This is within quite close access of central Parramatta. Most of this route follows bike paths. There are on-road sections around Newington and also between Meadowbank Station and Santa Rosa Park in Ryde. Except for a short section on Hill Rd, Homebush Bay, the roads are mainly fairly quiet and would be fine for moderately experienced road riders.
Cross beneath the M4 in the pedestrian underpass. Blind corner in tunnel.
Turn left onto the dedicated cyclepath.
The cycle path crosses below several major roads here.
The route can also be accessed from Harris Park via Junction Street.
The cycle path is good along this section. Take care crossing several suburban roads.
Overhead cycle path crosses James Ruse Drive.
Blind corner at the motorbike school.
Bike bath continues along the footpath.
Dedicated bike path
Bike path continues on the footpath
M4 tollbooths.
Silverwater Road crossing. Be careful of the traffic coming off the M4.
Nice straight run on this quiet section
Dedicated cyclepath again
Cross under M4
Gas pipes
Into Newington
On road cycling in a bike lane
Turn right onto Hill Road at traffic lights. There's no bike lane on Hill Road, which has 2 lanes of traffic in both directions. You can stick to the footpath on the Western side of the road although it can then be tricky to cross Hill Rd into Carter Street.
Turn left onto Carter Street. It's a reasonably wide and generally very quiet street.
Turn left into Birnie Avenue
Straight across the intersection onto quiet section of road.
Cut through the Aquatic Centre carpark.
Past the olympic television screen
Figtree Drive is quiet. Be careful turning right onto Australia Avenue. Proceed on the footpath.
Keep to the left and be careful of the blind bend.
Brick pit on the left
It's possible to turn right across the bridge. Going straight is a more direct route to Rhodes.
After steep downhill cross the road and there's an opening in the fence to go directly into the carpark.
Pleasant riding through Bicentennial Park.
Turn left. Very dark section at night.
Lots of riders through this whole section
There are a few different ways to get through Rhodes. I like to turn right here onto Oulton Avenue to get onto the bike path behind the shopping centre. You can also stick to the left and have a pleasant ride by the water.
Cross under Homebush Bay Drive and turn left onto the bike path.
Careful entering the tunnel.
Pedestrian footbridge across the railway line here
Entrance to Rhodes Shopping Centre with cafes and toilets somewhere around here.
A section of shared bike/pedestrian path going past Rhodes station before going back onto the road. No problems for moderately experienced riders. Slightly uneven road surface in parts.
Cross below the train line and then double back on yourself up Blaxland Road to get onto the bike path again.
Turn right onto the bike path.
Railway bridge
Crossing Parramatta River
Ascent towards Meadowbank Station
Onto the road again. Can get busy just around here.
Right turn at Constitution Road.
Followed soon after by a left into See Street.
Passing Meadowbank TAFE on the left.
Right at McPherson Street. Not many options here to get across Victoria road.
Left onto Bowden Street
Cross Victoria Road.
Short section of footpath.
Turn right onto Griffiths Avenue. I come this way to avoid Bowden Street which carries more traffic.
A left turn into a small laneway (Griffiths Lane).
Right at Linton Avenue
Careful through this round-a-about.
Turn left and get ready for a big climb up Melville Street. Clarke Street and Mount Street would be a quieter alternative to this route, although Mount Street is very steep.
It just keeps getting steeper!
Left turn into North Road. If this section is too busy, take the footpath and cross Blaxland Road at the pedestrian crossing opposite the RTA.
Be aware of the uneven road surface on North Road due to bumps from driveways.
Right turn into Heath Street
New section of bike path through Santa Rosa Park. May not be marked on older maps. The path is unlit, so be careful at night.
Bike path through Flinders Reserve
The cycle path just continues. Again, it's very dark at night so take care as there are sometimes walkers on the path.
The bike path crosses under Epping Road. Stay on the bike path to head toward Macquarie Centre. Or turn right and follow Epping road along the footpath to head into the industrial section of North Ryde.
Left onto Lyon Park Road
Right into Giffnock Avenue.
Macquarie Park train station due to open near here in 2008.
