The way points of this bicycle route:
Start at the corner of Filter Rd and Yalwal Rd. Head up Filter Rd if you want to include some single track to start. Head west along Yalwal Rd if you don't.
Turn left opposite Stockley Close onto a narrow track.
Veer left off the track.
Left onto this track
Straight across this track and down the hill.
Fun's over, back on the tar, but not for long
Another detour to take in some more single track incorporating part of the SCUM MTB Cabbage Tree Lane circuit.
Veer right off the "road" onto the single track
Sharp right here - just past a nice dark green Cycad (a plant for the non flora aware)
Take the left branch
Joining the Cabbage Tree Lane circuit. Go left.
Start/Finish area. Go right and follow the track all the way back to Yalwal Rd
Back on Yalwal Rd - head left (west)
Head across to the power line easement and follow it.
Turn right on Longreach Rd
Left into Bamarang Rd
Watch this descent - the RH curve is a bit off-camber - there may be oncoming traffic too. Once you're around it, let it rip.
Turn right back onto Yalwal Rd
Stick to Yalwal Rd by going left up the hill. Take it easy and pace yourself, there is a long steady climb ahead of you here.
Going past the Wattle Fire Trail turnoff (another interesting ride)
Here's the Old Burrier Fire Trail. Keep going straight 0.8km to the top of the Yalwal Gap for a scenic stop, or turn now if you like.
Top of the hill overlooking Yalwal. Enjoy the view before heading back to the Old Burrier Fire Trail turnoff.
Turn onto the Old Burrier Fire Trail this time.
Another optional detour - left onto the Saals Trail to take in a couple of lookouts.
There's a loolkout on the left here. We'll check this one out on the way back
Carpark area for the motorised. Us pedal powered can ride out to the lookout
Enjoy the view. Refuel and have a drink before heading back.
Lookout back towards Yalwal
Back on the Old Burrier Fire Trail. Go left and enjoy the next 1.6 km of downhill. Take it easy as it is very steep, dropping almost 200m.
OK, the fun's over. Turn Right onto Grassy Gully Rd.
Back on the sealed road now. The good part is the picturesque scenery on the ride back towards town.
The road is a bit narrow along here, with no overtaking or passing for cars. There are passing bays along here for them.
Another nasty little climb, not too long though.
Ah, we've been here before on the way out
If you like, turn left here and take Bamarang road back towards town. I opted to get the pain over quickly by going straight ahead and taking the 100m over 1 km climb straight away rather than the undulating ride along Bamarang Rd, with its nasty little climb at the end.
Nearly all downhill from here on.
Back to where we started in West Nowra.
