Ogunquit - Kennebunk Loop
Starts and ends at Inn Season Resort, The Falls at Oqunquit. But you can pick it up anywhere.
The first 9 miles is straight up Rt 1. Start the Rt 1 section of this route early in the morning, before auto traffic picks up. Before 7:30 am is ideal. Rt 1 has a nice shoulder most of the way, with the exception of a 1 mile stretch in Wells. But watch out for occasional sand.
The fun part is the return trip on Rt 9A, 9, and other back roads. The roads that have traffic also have good shoulders. Other roads on the return have no shoulders, but also have no traffic. In 2010 the pavement is some of the nicest anywhere, with a lot of newly paved sections.
Much of the back half is shaded by trees. If you ride this section after 10:00 am, watch out for potentially strong winds in open sections on Branch Rd (Rt 9A).
My favorite part of the route is Bears Den Road. It is completely covered by a high canopy of trees, has a gradual downhill slope, and smooth pavement. You can really fly through this section. But beware of a small pile of sand and gravel at the intersection of the dirt driveway into the campground.
Finishing off the course is a steady descent down to sea level with occasional small hills. Tatnic Rd is rough. Stay toward the center of the road when there are no cars to avoid the rough right edge.by Spin_Doctor
