start North on Grand Av - (go underneath the west end of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge) - (There is a sidewalk on the south side of this bridge with a great view down the river to the mountains, and it continues across the Hudson river to the city of Beacon, which has Metro North train station)

Left - Commonwealth Av

Balmville

sharp Right - River Rd

half Left - Sloane Rd - (not the full left which is Bennett Rd)

Left - continue on Sloane Rd down to its end

Right - Albany Post Rd

Right - rt 9W North - (high-traffic high-speed, with good width of traffic lane + shoulder as of 2009)

(food options along rt 9W)

Left - Lattintown Rd - (starts with a climb that includes around 125 vertical feet with steepness around 7% grade)

Right - continue on Lattintown Rd north a long ways

Marlboro

(cross Plattekill Rd, continue on Lattintown Rd a long ways to a T-intersection)

Left - Old Indian Rd

Right - Lattintown Rd

Right - Mulberry Lane, to its end

Right - Milton Turnpike

Milton

Left - Peach Rd

variation: to avoid tricky traffic situations later on rt 9W, can try instead: Left on Mahoney Rd, Right on Orchard Rd to its end, Right on rt 44 North for 1.5-2 miles, sharp Right on Tillson Av to its end at traffic light, cross rt 9W onto Haviland Rd to rejoin main route (this variation not checked by us since 2004)

Left - Perkinsville Rd, to its end

Right - Chapel Hill Rd, to traffic light

Left - rt 9W North (high-speed high-traffic road, requires crossing high-traffic entrance-exit ramps for Mid-Hudson Bridge. (for a way to avoid this tricky traffic, earlier Variation earlier on this route back around Peach Rd + Mahoney Rd)

Highland

Right (at traffic light) - Haviland Rd, to its end

Left - sidewalk across Hudson River on north side of Mid-Hudson Bridge (some points on the sidewalk are rather narrow -- consider dismounting for those)

dismount + walk across exit-entrance road for rt 9, then continue a short ways on sidewalk on north side of Church St / rt 44 / rt 55.

Left on sidewalk going north a very short ways

Poughkeepsie

join Clover St going north, to traffic light

Left - Main St, down hill

Right - Davies St

Left - down under rt 9 highway

Poughkeepsie traijn station -- Metro North railroad and Amtrak

Route Details

from the Newburgh-Beacon bridge north on the west side of the river to the Mid-Hudson bridge and Poughkeepsie near the train station. Mostly avoids higher-traffic roads. Goes by lots of fruit orchards, and some vineyards. Hilly. Labels on map points give detailed cue sheet directions (click on Show, then Cue Sheet). Not tested or tweaked for GPS navigation. routeID [bhva5c]. Connects with other routes on www.roberts-1.com/bikehudson, especially NYC to Albany stages - search on Bikely for [bhvr4b] + [bhva6c].
