(Variation: to avoid riding on high-traffic high-speed route 299 with no shoulder, could consider trying this: continue staight south on Albany Post Rd to its end, Right on county route 7, Right on Guilford Rd to its end, Right on route 44 West to rejoin main route. But we haven't checked that since 1996.)

first half of a hilly 59 mile loop of several great descents and climbs with sweeping views over three major watersheds (Wallkill, Rondout, Esopus), lots of quiet back roads and fun little downhills -- and the biggest cliffs, the largest lake, and the highest summits in the Hudson Valley. For second half of loop can search on Bikely for [bhvw7b]. For lots more info, map of full loop, variations, and detailed cue sheet, see www.roberts-1.com/bikehudson/r/west/np_ash - routeID [bhvw7a]. Map points have been tweaked + tested for GPS navigation in the direction given. Each section has fewer than 500 points, which is helpful for many GPS units. Not checked by us since 2009.
