The way points of this bicycle route:
Instead of taking the motor-vehicle-free single-lane road by the Alpsee, there are obvious public motor vehicle roads that run to the west which also go to Pinswang in Austria -- this alternative for those who want to avoid the dirt-gravel section or short steeper sections on the Alpsee road -- or for those who want to go by the town of Fuessen, or not interested in the castles.
dirt-gravel starts at the Germany-Austria border. It's not more than 1.5km long, mostly downhill.
Left turn onto Breitenwanger Str, which is narrow and makes a couple of quick curves at the start, seemed unlikely when we first got onto it, but then it straightened out.
for bicyclists who don't need the parking, and mainly want to see the exterior of buildings and grounds rather than purchase food or souvenirs or tickets for a tour of the interior rooms -- there _might_ be a quicker way to ride closer to the castle by going right at the first fork in the entrance road.

Castles and lakes, big forests, also some wide fields with cows and horses -- mostly avoiding high-traffic roads. We did this as one section of a single-day loop ride of 111 km (or less), but some riders might want to use it as a stage of a longer multi-day tour. Though it starts and ends in Germany, much of the middle goes thru Austria.

Visits two famous castles with remarkable exterior looks: Neuschwanstein and Linderhof - (recommend planning an extra 45 minutes off the bike to walk around the exterior of Linderhof). A long section beside a mountain lake and thru a forest with very little human development. Oberammergau is famous for its "passion play", and this route goes past the playhouse, but apart from that the town is pretty and pleasant to visit.
All on reasonably good asphalt except for one short section on dirt (which could be avoided). Some long gentle sections, some long moderate climbs, some short steep climbs.
For the other two sections of the loop, search on Bikely for [denpob], [denpoc].
We've done it once so far: the track given is from our GPS. We thought the full loop was a great ride so we're sharing it, but it's possible there are some mistakes or problems we didn't notice. This route not checked by us since 2009.
