The way points of this bicycle route:
This is basically my route from work in Mississauga to home in Etobicoke. It's similar to the "Islington to Mississauga City Centre" map I plotted, but there are some differences when travelling in this direction. It's mostly a very direct route, that avoids the worst streets. There are some scenic / friendlier detours as well.
Watch for turning cars when you cross Hurontario St.
Sometimes there are cars parked in the right lane here. Carefully merge left if you need to. Watch for gravel and dirt from the nearby construction.
Downhill! Whee! Get ready to merge into the middle lane to turn left on Burnhamthorpe Rd.
This short stretch of Burnhamthorpe Rd. isn't too pleasant, but it's over quickly.
Turn right onto central Parkway.
Get into the left turn lane. Note: The loop detectors in the turn lane here don't detect bicycles! If you're first in line at the light, move really far ahead so the cars behind you can move up and trigger the signal. Very annoying.... but not usually a problem because there are usually cars around there.
Continue along Bloor St.
I avoid going into the right turn lane here so that I don't have to make two lane changes. Just go straight through across Dixie.
Now entering Etobicoke (Toronto).
Watch for turning and merging traffic as you cross the West mall approaching the Highway 427 overpass. Merge over to the right lane.
You can get some good speed coming down from the bridge, but be prepared to merge back out of the right lane (it's a turn lane) and keep going straight.
Get ready to turn onto Kipling by merging left.
Just a short stretch of Kipling. The pavement here is aweful and the right lane is narrow. It's best to take the lane here for this short stretch.
Turn right at Tyre Ave. (There's a right turn lane)
Turn right at Royalavon.
The lights at Royalavon and Dundas take forever to change. Just prepare yourself to turn left and read a book or something. ;-)
You're in Islington Village now. Watch for parked cars in the right lane.
