The way points of this bicycle route:
Walk along footpath until Eliza Street to cross King Street only when the pedestrian light is green, into Wilson Street.
Through street closure and right, along footpath to pedestrian crossing light into Mountain.
Special bicycle light to turn right into contra-flow in Wattle Street to reach Mary Ann Street.
For the homeward journey, follow Ultimo Road, use bike lane for right turn into Harris then left into Mary Ann where a contra-flow channels you on to the shared path for contra-flow. Take care when later turning right onto Wattle - watch for turning traffic.
At this point, just after crossing the tram line, you see merge arrows in the traffic lane and a gap in the median. Cross at this gap to the car park exit ramp and go left around the car park and then through Darling Harbour and right at the end of the Chinese Garden to reach Liverpool Street and the city centre-south.
Either pull over to the left and cross over to Pyrmont Bridge as a pedestrian, or merge over to the right and use the right turn arrow to U-turn onto the Pyrmont Bridge. The latter is usually easy in peak hour, with big gaps in traffic.
Travel slowly and carefully on Pyrmont Bridge (and not in the outer, pedestrian zones). At the end, turn left onto the Western Distributor ramp.
For the homeward journey, turn from Kent Street right into Erskine and left into Sussex. Alternatively, ride to the end of Erskine, down the ramp and carefully along King Street Wharf and use the escalator to get up to Pyrmont Bridge.
Great harbour views from here. This is shared path - ride carefully on the downhill stretch.
Lunch/snack stop (there is a cafe just by Elizabeth Street, or eat sandwiches by the fountain).
Cross this intersection as a pedestrian, in two legs, or using the pedestrian green to get to the right turn lane on Liverpool Street into Wentworth. The detector is set back a bit from the stop line, so walk your bike back and forward a bit to trigger the right turn light.
Take care at this intersection - be patient and wait for a big enough gap.
At this point, walk your bike across the pedestrian crossing and through what can be a crowded area near the bus stop to reach the park. Alternate ride route is left into Devonshire, right into Chalmers Lane, right into Chalmers and left into the park. More circuitous, but better than mingling with the crowd.
For the inbound journey from this point, walk the footpath or ride in the bus lane on Chalmers, turn hard left (stay in bus lane) into Eddy Avenue and then, at the pedestrian crossing there, hop off and cross over to Belmore Park as a pedestrian. Ride through the park diagonally to then ride into the city on Pitt Street, which is relatively low traffic. Take care when crossing the tram lines to ride over them at a wide angle.
At the corner here it is shared path. The previous section on Wells Street is shared zone and bikes are allowed in both directions.
Little Eveleigh has a contra-flow lane for bikes and bikes are allowed through the street closure.
For the homeward journey there is a contra-flow bike lane on the one-way section of Wilson Street.
Until the traffic lights are fixed up to allow the bikes a phase, look carefully for your gap.
Finish in the park :o)

The City Circuit from Newtown shows how easy it is to get to the city via a couple of different routes, and is a good trial ride for people considering commuting to the city. Newtown to Town Hall is about 5.5km and takes only about 20 minutes. The routes are fairly easy and fairly low traffic. Harbour views included, with rest stop at Hyde Park fountain.
