LBUG - Leichhardt to Como
by bobm31

The way points of this bicycle route:

Leichhardt

Bakehouse Cafe, Moore St, Leichhardt, home of LBUG. Meet 830 am or as noted on the LBUG website for a Sunday ride.

Turn right here to avoid the no right turn sign at Catherine St. (Must get Council to exempt cyclists.)

Right at Catherine.

Cross Parramatta Rd into Phillips St.

Petersham

Use footpath to get through road closure. (Thinks- must get Council to make a better gap for cyclists)

Meets Crystal St. Usually not busy on a Sunday. During week you could use the footpath along here if traffic is heavy, or just cycle confidently and take the lane.

Stay in left lane to go straight ahead. Left turning cars will just have to wait. And dont let the cars squeeze you as the road narrows on Shaw St. Alternatively you can try Frederick/Hopetoun and cross Stanmore Rd (no lights) to a park and John St.

Marrickville

Roundabout at bottom of hill.

Addison Rd is direct and slightly downhill so a good route on a Sunday BUG ride. During week you might choose some quieter back streets through this area, like Newington Rd. See Bashleys Bike It.

Illawarra Rd is a cycle route to Marrickville but is a narrow street.

Can turn right here but there are no lights at Victoria Rd so easier to go straight ahead here and turn at Enmore Rd.

Right at Enmore Rd

Good on a Sunday, not so good during week with more traffic and parked cars, on a standard Sydney 12.8 m sub (standard)-arterial road. Could try Smith /Fitzroy St

Follow road down and under the railway bridge

Left on Myrtle St.

Right at Carrington Rd. Industrial area during week, quiet on a Sunday.

Left at Richardson Cr

Roundabout. Get into right turn lane on approach.

Turn left into Tempe Station car park. A good meeting spot. Also can go west along Cooks River Cycleway from here, through Mackey Park.

Meet the Cooks River Cyclepath here. Goes under the railway near river. Sometimes affected by high tides or floods in the river.

Tempe

Cross Princes Highway at lights opposite Holbeach Av, onto shared path on east side of Princes Highway.

Wolli Creek

Path continues through Park. Cooks River on left.

Right on Levey St. Path is a bit confusing around here. Easier to follow the road.

Arncliffe

Right turn onto shared footpath, watching for traffic turning from both directions off Marsh St. No warning signs.

Cross Flora St at lights. Watch for turning traffic.

Underpass for cyclists.

Another underpass

Path continues

Left onto Bestic St. There is a short section of cycle lane here, past the bridge. Can turn right onto Francis St if wanting a quick way to Sandringham via Crawford and Chuter Sts. Or for return trip.

Kyeemagh

Detour left here if wanting to explore the cycleway through the reserve. Eventually goes under General Holmes Drive and comes out at Botany Bay and rejoins the more direct route at corner of Bestic St and The Grand Pde.

Get into the straight ahead lane (right- most). Cross busy General Holmes Drive.

Detour rejoins the route here. Great views of Botany Bay. Right onto The Grand Parade. Can use road or cycleway to Rowley St, then cycleway.

Brighton

Joins busy main road. Use the cyclepath on left if too much traffic.

Cyclepath is inconvenient here but the road is busy, so take your choice through the Bay St area. Get back on the path a bit further down past all the pedestrian activity.

Path does a few little deviations and goes through car parks but be patient. There is a block of toilets if needed for a stop.

Path sometimes affected by sand build up.

Ramsgate

Sandringham

Left at Clareville St. There is a cake shop near here. Clareville St is the direct cycleroute if wanting to avoid the beachfront path on return trips. Goes via Russell, Norman, Chuter, Crawford, Francis Sts back to Bestic St.

Sandringham

Use shared footpath over Captain Cook Bridge. Steep ramp up at end of sailing club car park.

Taren Point

Rejoins quiet roads. Follow cycle route signs.

Right on a bridge over Taren Point Rd.

Left on Old Taren Point Rd.

Sylvania Waters

Left on Box Rd. Nice and wide and runs west but motor traffic has to turn left or right at Port Hacking Rd, except buses. So pretend you are a bus or cross as a pedestrian.

Cross Port Hacking Road. Bus Only lane turns green for bikes so use that (slightly illegal) or cross as a pedestrian.

Sylvania Heights

Left at Amaroo St.

Right at Garnet Rd.

Use footpath and side road along here if traffic on Highway is a worry. Can also cross at lights to a path/service road on other side of Highway.

Cross The Boulevarde. Can use footpath or service road.

Right at Waratah St. Straight ahead to end of road.

Sutherland

Right at Toronto Av. Mostly downhill to Como - one steep uphill. Alternatively, take the footbridge here over the railway and cruise down on west side, crossing back to Como via Yamba Rd.

Como

Cafe here by the water. Good spot for a break. Also a picnic area. Beware the monthly market- gets crowded. Second Sunday. Continue home via the cycleway across the Como Bridge to Oatley.

Cycleway over rail bridge.

Oatley

Path continues alongside railway.

Path rejoins road at Myra Place.

Joins Oatley Pde.

Oately Station.

There is a cafe here, La Spezia, if Como was too crowded. Oatley Park is worth a visit. Left under railway and then follow Wonoona Pde.

Right onto Hurstville Rd.

Left onto Judd St. Dont go down Hurstville Rd unless you like steep climbs.

Left at Coleborne Av

Mortley

Right onto Railway Pde

Left at Ellen Subway Path, under the railway.

Right at Victoria Av

Penshurst

Left at Penshurst St. Long straight run to Beverly Hills. Wide road with a cycle shoulder.

Beverly Hills

Right at roundabout onto Edgbaston Rd

Left at King Georges Rd. This is a busy multi-lane road. Can wait for a gap and get into right turn lane, or use footpath and cross at lights into Tooronga Tce if traffic is too heavy.

Beverly Hills

Right at Tooronga Terrace.

Squeeze point here. Otherwise Vanessa St is reasonably wide. It is signed as a bike route to Kinsgrove. An alternative is to use the cycleway next to the M5, both sides. Access these from Coolongatta Rd, which goes over the M5, or Tallawalla St.

Kingsgrove

Kingsgrove

Cross Kingsgrove Rd into Kinsgrove Av.

Left at Kooreela St to a pedestrian underpass of the M5, to Arinya St.

Kingsgrove

M5 underpass

Right at Warejee St. Could continue on Arinya but is a fairly long climb to Homer St. Continue via Marcella, Thomas and Olive to rejoin route at Miller St. Take your pick.

Left at Lundy Av

Right at Poole St

Left at Beaconsfield.

Cross Homer St, which can be busy.

Right at Kilkee Av

Left at Miller St

Road closure. Cycle path continues through, near a school on right.

Right at William St. Watch for traffic.

Earlwood

Left at Warburton Pde

Canterbury

Path through park goes along Cup and Saucer Ck. Or can zig zag through Francis, Westfield, Bramston, McGrath, The Entrance, Fuller, Woolcott Sts.

Rejoin road at Fore St.

Earlwood

Path off roundabout at Burlington Av leads to Cooks River

Cooks River path.

Footbridge over Cooks River

Hurlstone Park

Right onto Cooks River Path

Hurlstone Park

Left off path near tennis courts and footbridge to Tennent Pde

Dulwich Hill

Right at Ness Av, or pedal up Garnet St.

Roundabout

Right onto Hercules St.

Unused railway line on right. Could be a rail trail some day.

Cross New Canterbury Rd

Right at Denison Rd

Lewisham

Right at Hunter

Lewisham

Cyclists have access through this closed off street. Use lights to cross Railway Tce into West St..

Leichhardt.

Many ways to get home. Try a right up Albert St. Or Flood/Allen Sts.

Right/left into Jarrett St.

Left at Renwick St.

Moore St West currently closed for work on a scshool field. Can cut through school playground near Allen St and use Hill St or Balmain Rd instead, or Stanley/Mackenzie.

Leichhardt

Back at Moores. Do a search for LBUG for more rides.
