LBUG Leichhardt to Balmain via Whites Creek.

The way points of this bicycle route:

Leichhardt

This route gets you to The Crescent in Annandale and onto Balmain via Rozelle.

Left onto Maquarie St then Whites Creek Lane. The lane is a public road so watch out for cars and trucks ( there are some factories along the lane) and also there are some rough patches or raised concrete edges. The main benefit of using the lane is that it goes under Moore St, but apart from that you could use Young St to do the same job.

Annandale

Stop and cross Styles St with care. Cars often travel quickly down Styles and Collins St, although speed humps have helped. Refuge only has room for one cyclist at a time. Take special care with children.

The lane goes under Moore St. Watch for rough sections of paving and other hazards.

Path goes through a wetland, created on the line of the old Whites Creek.

There is a BBQ here for picnics and a BMX pit on other side of the canal.

Lilyfield

Cross Piper St at right angles to path on other side.

Path goes past some houses. Watch for dogs and children running out onto path. If these bother you use White St or Young Lane and Hutchinson St instead. If the whole offroad path thing doesn't thrill you use Young St or Catherine St to get to the same point on Brenan St.

Path joins Brenan St and Railway Pde. These are quiet streets.

Turn left here onto a path that goes under the light rail bridge

Path comes out at The Crescent. Go left and cross at the lights at the City West Link if going to Balmain or Anzac Bridge. The crossing is a bit awkward, needing two stages, so just take care. Or, go right here along the footpath to the lights at Johnston St to get to Chapman Rd and Bicentennial Park and Glebe.

Use shared footpath up to Victoria Rd

New footbridge goes over Victoria Rd

Go straight ahead off the footbridge and follow footpath up to Roberts St if going to Balmain or Rozelle. Path narrows behind a badly sited bus shelter. Complain to your local member! (Turn right to get onto the cyclepath up across Anzac Bridge. Watch for other cyclists and peds at this path intersection.)

Rozelle

Cross Robert St at lights then a left into Crescent St/Moore and Goodsir for a quiet way into Rozelle.

Rozelle

Up Goodsir and a right onto Evans St. Evans is narow and sometimes busy but the speed limit is 40 km/hr (throughout Balmain and Rozelle) and usually motorists are patient. Take the lane so they cant squeeze past and ride confidently.

Balmain

Busy small roundabout on Mullens. Take care as car drivers on Mullens often think they have right of way, even if you were there first.

Balmain

Loyalty Square. Shops pubs and cafes galore. If you are returning to Leichhardt the following is a direct way without any hills but does involve a bit of traffic. You could also return via the Iron Cove foreshore route - see Tour de Balmain, or try Evans/Denison/Lilyfield Rd/Catherine.

Post Office, Police and Library along here.

This corner and crossing is notorious, watch for pedestrians, buses and 4 WDs.

Rozelle

Darling St has a shared bike/parking lane and is 40 K so usually OK to cycle along here, and it is relatively flat.

Roundabout. Go right down Wise St if taking the foreshore route via Tery and Margaret St. Straight ahed if going the quick way via darling St.

Rozelle shopping centre.

Victoria Rd intersection. Usually best to get into position between left turning vehicles and straight ahead vehicles and head off when lights turn green. No problem if you are road savvy. Avoid peak hours though and it is easier.

Ride out a bit to avoid any opening car doors. Slightly downhill here so you can get along quickly. Dont get squeezed on the left bend near Foucart. Nice straight stretch coming up. You could take a diversion through Rozelle Hospital, fine old buildings and gardens. Come out at Wharf St.

Lilyfield

The intersection at the City West Link is sometimes congested and you need confidence to use the road here to get onto Balmain Rd but it is direct. A less direct way is as follows.

Dismount here and walk across to the footpath on the other side of Balmain Rd

Cross City West Link here on pedestrian phase.

One day the Council will pave the footpath on this side along Balmain Rd, but until then turn right and use footpath along the CW Link to Derbyshire Rd, where there is a gap in the sound wall.

Leichhardt

Turn left through a gap in the sound wall onto Derbyshire Rd

Leichhardt

Cut through to Balmain Rd on a path through the School and cross into Hill St. or turn right onto Allen St if wanting a coffee at the Bar Italia in Norton St. Also head along Allen St if going to Hawthorne Canal.

Turn right onto Catherine St

Finish the loop here at Albion St. As an extra, Zoom in a bit to see the sneaky way to Norton St from here.

Right into Redmond

Through council car park

Narrow walkway at side of building. Just rideable. Eventually may be able to get a gate in a fence on the Stag carpark to make this easier.

At Balmain Rd, left then right into Dot Lane

Back entance to Library and Forum. Walk bike. In future there may be a direct link to Norton St through a locked gate.

You are in the Forum, a fake Italian square. Wheel bike up ramp and exit to Norton St. You can also go via the Norton Plaza car park entrance a bit further north up Balmain Rd, which has an exit on Norton.

Another sneaky shortcut is up Renwick Lane.

Head west here along Jarret and Albert St to Flood St. Or cross Parramatta Rd at Renwick St pedestrian lights to get to Railway St and Petersham.
