LBUG Mulga Bill 2 - Windsor to Lower Portland
by bobm31

The way points of this bicycle route:

Windsor

Start and finish at Windsor Station car park, or ride back towards Sydney via the extension shown.

Take the back way to avoid the traffic on George St. Historic old Greenaway designed chuch is to the left.

Watch for speeding traffic on your right. Narrow bridge so take the lane.

Choice here. Turn left for a more scenic route via Argyle Reach Rd (country lane more like, with some dirt) or keep on the main road which has a good shoulder except for one narrow bridge.

Narow bridge about here. Shoulder cuts out. It is only a short bridge so check for traffic and take the lane so you wont get squeezed.

Wilberforce

Shop here for any last minute purchases. Alternative route from Windsor joins the route here via King St. You can return via that way.

First hill of the day, not too long.

Old Sackville Rd is another way to get back to Windsor via Kurmond Rd and Brewers Ln.

Road undulates.

Can take a detour to the right and link up with Coromandel Rd - includes a bit of off-road track near the river.

Ebenezer

A school and a few houses, not much else. Right here onto Tizzana Rd

Detour here to the historic chuch by the river. Well worth a few minutes and there is a small cafe there too, run by some elderly ladies who have been or maybe still are keen cyclists.

Church

Nice run along here.

Tizzana Winery

They do lunch here in a restaurant - give them a ring to see if open. Dont know how expensive it is. Camwest has a ride there every year.

House along here and road narrows. Nice riverside scenery.

Road becomes gravel. Sometimes rough with pot holes. Roadies wont like it. Just slow down a bit.

Sackville

Rejoins the asphalt again. Ferry on right but we go Left here (come back via ferry, but you can do it either way).

Right here on West Portland Rd up a fairly steep hill, thankfully not too long.

Keep going to right here. If you turn left onto East Kurrajong Rd you can do another good ride to Kurrajong Heights. This was the original Mulga Bill route - see LBUG-Windsor Mulga Bill 1 on bikely.

Good downhill

Longish uphill starts

Top of hill.

Lower Portland

Long downhill.

Right turn to ferryis easy to miss. Dont go over the bridge straight ahead(at least not on this ride, you can possibly get through to St Albans this way if you want to explore)

Vehicle Ferry

Ferry operates regularly. Usually only a short wait.

There maybe a shop open in the caravan park by the river a little to the left. Turn right here and we'll have lunch a bit further on.

Lunch spot

Lunch spot by river in caravan park. There is a small shop here, usually open for icecreams and drinks and maybe hot pies, but better to bring your own in case they are shut. They tolerate cyclists sitting on the river bank for lunch but there is a sign saying the park is for paying van users only, so be polite and ask permission. Nice river side spot.

Nice uphill after lunch! Stick at it.

top of climb

Main road. Turn right with care.

Cruise down to ferry. watch for the odd hard to see pothole on this sometimes shady road.

Sackville vehicle ferry. Runs regularly. Free.

Shop near here.

This hill always kills, is steeper than it looks, or maybe everyone is getting a little tired.

Retrace roue to Wilberforce

Take the alternative rout back

Dirt starts. Vegetable farms on either side and sometimes you have to dodge sprinklers or tractors etc.

Freemans Reach

Joins the asphalt again. This road has no shoulder and the locals drive fast so take care.

Rejoin the main road. There is a bike path from here over the bridge but if traffic is light it is quicker and easier to use the road.

Windsor

Dangerous to turn right here so keep speed up and charge up the hill into Windsor.

Have an icecream or a beer here. Small park often has a band playing. There are craft and food stalls down George St pedestrian mall too. walk bikes throughor ride around the block to avoid.

Back at Station. Hourly trains to Sydney, or ride back via Mulgrave and Vineyard following the railway line to Quakers Hill. Windsor road is suposed to geta cycle path along it in the future but is a bit busy at present.
