The way points of this bicycle route:
Start at Hawthorne Canal. There is a foot bridge here and the path then goes under the railway line in a short tunnel.
Cross busy Darley Rd at a roundabout. Watch for fast traffic. Go east up Allen St, a steep section soon levels out.
Cross Norton St at a slight angle into continuation of Allen St, through a road closure. Don't ride across the pedestrian crossing. Its dangerous and against the law. Go at an angle through the road closure ( it was designed so bikes could do this) so you dont have to use the pedestrain crossing.
Take path through the High School between playground and staff car park. Narrow fit between some bollards. There will be a better path further north, between school and new playing field, now being constructed. This will lead to Moore St.
Cross Balmain Rd into Hill St or turn left and go to Moore St.
Hill St has speed humps so you can take a detour back to Moore St here
Moore St is nice and wide here but narrows at bottom of hill after the S bend, so be prepared.
Just after the S bend the road narrows so there isnt much room in the bike lane if there are cars parked, so keep out in the traffic lane and use your speed to start up the hill. Also watch out for buses pulling out of the stop just before Young St. Moore St now becomes Booth St.
Negotiate a roundabout.
Keep out in the traffic lane to go around the bend because the cycle lane suddenly cuts out aftr Wigram Rd. Also wartch out for cars nosing out of Wigram rd. Keep your speed up for the hill ahead.
You can turn left here on Alezandra Rd through the housing development, or go up to Bridge Rd. Alexandra Rd is quieter.
Join Bridge Rd here at the traffic lights.
Right turn is legal for bikes. Get into the lane well before when there is a gap in traffic. If going into the north CBD you can keep going on Bridge Rd, it is a failrly safe and direct route past the Fishmarket, with a couple of danger points you can bypass. Ross St is narrow and busy, but just take the lane for the short distance to St Johns Rd. You can avoid Ross St by turning right at Junction St instead, but you lose a bit of height.
Left onto St Johns Rd, which has a shared bike/parking lane marked. Watch for car doors. Usually a good route with not too much traffic. On return trip you can avoid Ross St by following St Johns Rd further west to Junction St.
Right onto Campbell.
Left onto Cowper
Right onto Glebe St through a road closure. Bikes are allowed.
Enter Kelly St. This is one way east for cars, but cyclists can use a contra-flow biike lane on the return trip. Just be alert for parked cars pulling out into the lane, and cars not giving way at Mountain St.
Bicycles can make a right turn here at a special bike crossing, into a short bike lane on east side of Wattle St. Useful bit of work by the City Council.
Left up Mary Ann St using the road. For return trip use the southern side shared footpath, avoiding pedestrians. Watch for cars turning right off Wattle St
Cross busy Harris St at lights.
Right into Omnibus lane. Sometimes has parked trucks in it that partially block the lane.
Left onto Ultimo Rd. The ABC building is opposite.
You are now at George St, City. To head further east, go right then left into Rawson Pl and follow Eddy Avenue up to Elizabeth St . If heading north, take George St or use Barlow St to get to Pitt St, which is a little quieter.
Left up Rawson.
Crossing Pitt St. Depending on traffic and your confidence it may be easier to get into the right lane and stay in the far right hand lane up Eddy Avenue until the pedestrian crossing leading into the Station. Otherwise stay left. There is a busy bus stop in the left lane so you may have to dodge buses pulling in or out, another reason to use the right most lane. With a little practice this section is not so hard to navigate, just be sensible. You could also use the footpath judiciously.
Dismount here and use pedestrian crossing to access the Station.
