The way points of this bicycle route:
Starting from Flora St. If you want the quickest/ best route from Kirrawee to Riverwood, go via Jannali, Como Bridge, Oatley. This route describes one way of going via Alfords Point Bridge. If you want to have your say about the new bike route across the bridge, the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors will be on display from 10 December, 2007 to 25 January, 2008, details via http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au
Cross Acacia Rd North (Princes Hwy) using the traffic lights, then continue along Flora St.
Roundabout at intersection with Glencoe St, continue along Flora St.
Roundabout at intersection with Eton St, continue along Flora St.
Left into Old Princes Hwy.
Sharp right at traffic lights to head up the ramp over Sutherland Station.
Pedestrian crossing, follow the road around to the left over Sutherland Station.
From here its all downhill to Woronora Bridge.
Cross Sutherland Pde to Adelong St.
Roundabout, right into Linden St.
Traffic lights at intersection with The Grand Parade, continue down hill along Linden St.
Linden St becomes River Rd. In about 20m you could veer left to use an entrance to the shared ped/bike path to get to Woronora Bridge. The route decribed will use the road till Woronora Bridge.
Just before Woronora Bridge, on your left is an emergency breakdown bay and an entrance to access the shared ped/bike path. If you are moving fast you will have to break hard using most of the bay to slow down, then loop back up to the path entrance. Watch out for other vehicles entering the breakdown bay.
Right onto the path and down hill.
Path goes under the bridge.
Turn left. There is a shared ped/bike path under the bridges north side. Not much traffic noise, great views of the river and tree tops, and a good spot to get out of any rain.
Good views of the tree tops and river.
The bridge finishes about here. A path continues along the north side of the road.
Sharp right and a short steep climb up the path.
Leave the path and get onto Menai Rd.
Left at the T-intersection with Yates Rd to continue up Menai Rd.
Right into Menai Rd at the traffic lights.
From here you can use a shared ped/bike path for some kms.
Cross Pyree St . Careful on your right for cars hammering it around the corner.
Back on the path.
The zenith of planning.
Cross Dandarbong Ave.
Back on the path.
Cross ANZAC Rd.
Cross Forestgrove Dr. Look out for vehicles moving fast from your right.
Back on the path.
Cross Carter Rd.
Continue along path besides Menai Rd.
Cross Old Illawarra Rd. An alternative to get through this intersection faster is to get on the road back at the last roundabout, go past here and rejoin the path past the next traffic lights.
Continue along path besides Old Illawarra Rd (Menai Rd).
Cross New Illawarra Rd at the lights.
Continue on the path besides Old Illawarra Rd (Menai Rd).
Cross Hall Dr. Police compound is on your right.
Back on the path.
Turn right, cross Old Illawarra Rd (also called Menai Rd on some maps) to use the path on the far side.
Back on the path.
Road crossing.
A path veers off to the left, keep going straight ahead.
Route uses the path on the southern side of Old Illawarra Rd and the bridge over Alfords Point Rd.
Cross an entrance road for Alfords Point Rd.
Through some bollards and back on the path.
Cross Oriana Rd.
Cross Blaxland Dr.
Left to cross Old Illawarra Rd.
I'll be honest, from here the route choices to cross Alfords Point Bridge suck. This route will take you along the very narrow breakdown lane downhill to the bridge.
Roundabout, turn left into Brushwood Dr.
Right to the access road to Alfords Point Rd.
Watch for vehicles on your left.
Theres a bus stop here and a bit of room to get out of the traffic, a good opportunity to check nothing is loose on your bike as from here to the bridge you'll get up a bit of speed and some of the surfaces suck.
You've got a choice between trying to claim a lane in an 80 zone, or using the very narrow breakdown lane that has a dangerous ridge down it. Lots of fun on a rainy windy night.
Alfords Point Bridge. From here you can stay on the road (80 zone, no breakdown or bike lane at all) or use the path on the bridges western side. If you use the path watch out for the drains, uneven surface, debri and narrow entrance to the path here. Both truly apalling options. This route will use the path.
Alfords Point Bridge. If you are using the path you might as well enjoy the view and try to ignore the noise while you are dodging broken glass. If you chose to use the road you are probably spinning out of top gear hoping that car on your arse doesn't take you out. Work has started on duplicating Alfords Point Bridge, we should get a better way across Georges River then. During the work at times the speed limit across the bridge will be 40km.
So the path across the bridge finishes here. Really. It just finishes. You've got some concrete drains, grass and crash debri to ride on. If you want a break, if you search around you will find the walking track down to the beach. Construction work means you may have to dodge a couple of barriers around here.
Cruddy drains are about here.
This route avoids much of the traffic but is steep, winding and poorly lit. Follow the path right under Alfords Point Rd. One faster way through here use the street just to the west, then Henry Lawson Drive. Or just use Alfords Point Rd (much high speed traffic).
Sharp right back uphill.
Cross the road entrance to Alfords Point Rd, head into Sewell Ave on the other side. Watch for high speed traffic from your left.
Left into Roma Ave.
Right into Villiers Rd.
Left into Dilke Rd.
Right into Henry Lawson Dr at the traffic lights. This can be a busy road, but from here to the bridge across Salt Pan Creek its downhill and fast. These lights don't stay green for long so you'll have to move quickly to clear the intersection.
After crossing Salt Pan Creek, theres a bus stop bay just ahead, head into that and haul on the brakes.
Onto a steep short path that takes you to Elwin St.
Get onto Elwin St, a quiet back street.
Right into Clarendon Rd.
Left into Belmore Rd South.
Riverwood Police Station is on your left, continue along Belmore Rd South.
Peter Bundys bike shop is on your right (reopened Sept 2007).
Traffic lights at intersection of Belmore Rd South, Webb St and Cairns St. Continue along Belmore Rd South.
On the southern side of Riverwood Station are toilets, taxi rank, Coles and Woolies, takeaways and Belmontes Pizza (good, has outdoor seating, BYO).

Kirrawee to Riverwood via Alfords Point Bridge. Much of the route on pathways or back streets but there are a couple of horror sections of unfriendly main road. The worst section of that should be remedied when the Alfords Point Bridge duplication is finished.
