START; WEST on MAIN St. [Rt. 77] from Rt. 806. (Before the next turn, you will cross U.S. Rt. 15, Catoctin mountain, the Appalachian Trail & Rt. 17/153.) The Catoctin Mountain Park visitors' center, two miles ahead, is worth a visit. The President's retreat at Camp David is in the park.

Smithsburg, Md.

<----LEFT at JEFFERSON Blvd. (Smithsburg Pike.) [Rt. 64]. (Before the next turn, you will cross Rt. 66, Rt., Rt. 804, Rt. 62 & the Cumberland valley.)

Hagerstown, Md.

<----LEFT at CANNON St. to remain on Rt. 64.

RIGHT----> at FRANKLIN St. [U.S. Rt. 40/ Rt. 144]. (Before the next turn, you will cross RT. 65, U.S. Rt. 11, I-81, Rt. 144, Rt. 63, Conocheague creek, Rt. 57 & Rt. 68.)

Clear Spring, Md.

<----LEFT at BIG SPRING Rd. (First <Left past Rt. 68. You will cross I-70 after the turn.)

RIGHT----> at BIG POOL Rd. [Rt. 56]

Fort Frederick State Park

<----LEFT at FORT FREDERICK Rd. (There is a campground in the C & O CANAL Nat. Park next to the state park.) Fort Frederick is the only remaining fort from the French & Indian War (there were only two). Visitors' center and camp store are worth a visit.

Turn Right> at the canal towpath to continue west. The western end of the Canal park joins up with the Allegheny Highlands Trail, which leads to Pittsburgh, Pa. entirely off-road. (www.ahtmtrail.org)
