The way points of this bicycle route:

Start 6:10am. This is the sixth year I am riding to Newcastle to visit my family for Xmas. In 2001 & 2002 they lived in Jesmond (160km trip).

Cracks across highway until Parklands Rd

Mount Colah Servo

Berowra

F3 closed to cyclists. Pacific Hwy surface reasonable. Very little traffic until Wyong.

Beautiful views to your left over valley.

Poor road surface filled in in numerous places. Take care unless you know this road well.

Appalling road surface until F3 exit.

Cheero Point Servo

Drink stop. The next section to Mount White looks like hard work on the graph. However; the road is excellent and there are no steep parts.

There is a cafe on your right if you need it. The next shop is at Peats Ridge (22.5km away).

Mount White

Road very good to excellent through to Calga.

Calga

Ignore first turning; then L at T-section.

Excellent road. Ride on the extremely smooth sections and fly into Peats Ridge.

Peats Ridge Servo

Stop for chips, drink and chat to the friendly staff.

SA taking sign to Central Mangrove.

Road still good, but has small rocks just underneath the tar seal; section to Kulnura is slower.

Kulnura

R into Springs Rd. Very slow road surface with many short hills; and small bumps just below the tar.

Follow the sign to Wyong.

Begin Bumble Descent

Ride along middle of road so as to minimise effect of the numerous erosion bumps. This is safe; just listen for traffic and move over to let it pass you. The few motorists are generally all friendly.

Yarramalong

Slow right down before very sharp R at T-section. There is a store and a pub here if you need to stop before Wyong (19km away).

Fair but slow road surface with a few bumps. Friendly motorists and locals. Beautiful valley scenery to Wyong.

Road surface becomes quick and smooth.

Traffic increases to moderate levels. A few small potholes until Wyong Racecourse.

Cross bridge; climb steep but short hill, and go SA at roundabout.

R at highway, then first L. First section of railway bridge is steep and appallingly potholed; take a low gear.

Wyong (Baker Park)

Stop for some tap water. It is 10:30am and I phone through to my folks an E.T.A of 2:30pm. Temperature stays a comfy 25degrees for the whole trip. Traffic moderate through to Kanwal. Good roads and ample shops and water taps for remainder of trip.

Wyongah

L into Wahroonga, 3rd R into Swan, L into Craigie, R into Walker

Kanwal

Lots of traffic for rest of trip.

Ride decisively through roundabouts. Then easy section to Blue Haven.

Minor pinch through to highway link.

R at traffic lights. Watch for loose rocks and glass when crossing white markings. Ride decisively and watch the traffic closely until you get over to the left.

Doyalson

The section to Lake Munmorah always seems to have a crosswind that limits your speed to abt 29km/hr. Busy but very safe road to Swansea.

Stop at servo for sesame bar and can of energy drink.

Lake Munmorah School

Gwandalan Turnoff

2 steep pinches either side of a flat section; a little extra effort makes the section to Cams Wharf Rd much quicker.

Nice sweeping views over lake to your left.

Steep here isn't it. Grit your teeth, because....

Now it's downhill all the way into Swansea. Enjoy!

Swansea McDonalds

Ride decisively through roundabout. Swansea shopping centre isn't dangerous, but you still need to watch the parked cars.

Swansea Bridge

Very flat, easy ride to Belmont.

Belmont

Stop for lunch (12:30-12:55)at Kerry's cafe. The curious staff are gobsmacked at where I have ridden from and where I am going to.

Belmont Hospital

Valentine Servo

Eleebana

Stop to apply sunscreen and enjoy view across lake to Speers Point.

Warners Bay

Again; not a dangerous shopping centre; but watch the parked cars.

R at "Pippy's at the Point" pub.

Cockle Creek Station

Clock at "Sulphide Club" says 25degrees and 1:45. I am unhappy with the time and decide to crank things up a bit for the rest of the trip.

R at busy roundabout into shopping centre. Ride decisively; then carefully once in centre.

Glendale Shopping Centre

Buy some booze from cut price liquor store.

Rudolf Steiner School Glendale

Enjoy the downhill.

Ride decisively through short roundabout with fast-moving traffic.

2 roundabouts; 2 places to change lanes and a set of traffic lights in next 600m. Be alert and you'll be fine.

Wallsend

Newcastle Greyhound Track

Shortland Servo

Watch for traffic entering from bypass.

Sandgate Servo

Final drink stop. Cashier reckons I've got 15km to go.

Hexham Bridge

Watch for traffic entering at high speed from around a bend to your left. Stop if necessary and move to left of bridge as quickly as you can.

Watch for glass on shoulder.

L at roundabout; then R at next roundabout.

R into Tathra; R at T-section, then onto cycleway; L at next T-section; next L into Links; next L into Truscott

Raymond Terrace

Arrive at finish 3:00pm. Enjoy cricket on Foxtel & booze for the afternoon.
