The way points of this bicycle route:
Overpass over Hume Fwy. Feel sorry for the people stuck in cars while you're heading for a week of cycling bliss.
turn left (eastwards) along Snow Rd
The Cheese Factory makes an excellent lunchtime stop
left in direction of Everton
Join Great Alpine Rd - your road for the next 300 km!
at this point, you can continue to ride the road, or use the rail trail as far Bright
Here can be a convenient point to break for the first night. There are a couple of supermarkets and at least one good bakery (where the railtrail crosses Prince St, IIRQ). There are two campgrounds, the one on the eastern side of town seemed the nicer.
Side-trip up Mt Buffalo anyone?
This is the last sizable township until Omeo, so getany last-minute gear or supplies here. There's lots of accommodation and cafes/restaurants here, but I suggest carrying on to Harrietville to shorten the next days riding
Excellent campground here. From here, the real climbing starts in the morning :)
nice steep section to get the legs working straight out of the township...
Meg's corner - very steep section.
Rd south goes off to Dargo High Plains, maybe next time ....
At least the scenery is fantastic. Somewhere around here I started thinking it'd be nice if they had a cable car...
Made it to the top! It's a nice feeling, eh? In summer, at least one of the hotels should be open for some well deserved food and drink. But I suggest carrying on to Dinner Plain for accommodation.
Summer-time, there's always at least one lodge taking guests, plus a hotel. We stayed at Currawong lodge and had a rest day with some bushwalking to rest the riding muscles
Some big decents. Don't miss the scenic outlook out to Mt Kosiousko (I did, and I wasn't riding back up to see it ;-)
possible stop-over. When I made this trip I went on to Swifts Creek and camped there, but it was no great shakes
From Omeo, I suggest backtracking to the Swifts Creek-Omeo road for some quieter scenic riding
Bike-eating bridge
tempting alternative route from here is to take the road to Buchan and extend the tour by another day. Not sure if it is sealed, tho'
The riding here is great. Just be careful of the logging trucks...
There is a really nice looking bush campsite around here...
5-star bakery here :-)
I'd recommend taking the rail trail into Bairnsdale
V-line back to Melbourne. Congratulation yourself on completing one of the great cycling tours of Victoria.
