East Brisbane / Rocklea / East Brisbane commute
by Sholto

The way points of this bicycle route:

East Brisbane

This is a circualr route for daily commute. Ipswich Rd (coming latter) is very busy, I always leave before 6 AM.

Wooloongabba

Ipswich Rd

Busy Rd even at 6AM. Trucks increasing to murderous levels soon. Ride fast!

Choke point!

Road narrows to two lanes and further constricted by crash barriers. Option is to take the footpath from the Norman Hotel to te next set of lights - usually a bit of glass around though.

Moorooka

Moorooka

veer left for Muriel Ave exit

turn Right at the lights onto Sherwood Rd.

Rocklea

Busy intersection, no shoulder. Take the lane until clear.

Rocklea

Return trip uses mostly quiet back streets and bike paths - but not just yet!

Right at the lights, then keep left until the next turn.

Left into quiet streets and gentle hills.

Tarragindi

Moorooka

Right at the lights. Traffic usually quiet enough that you can move right early, otherwise it's a blind corner for following traffic.

Bike path most of the rest of the way.

Greenslopes

Bike path runs though stormwater drainage/ park land. The road underpasses in particular may have pooled water and muck after rain.

Stones Corner

This is all park land, you're not riding through someone's back yard.

Stones Corner

footpath and watch for traffic entering Cleveland St from the left.

Use pedestrian crossing outside the skate shop. Cross to the bike path between the hardware shop and the library.

Coorparoo

A large colony of flying foxes roost here during the day.

Onto the footpath, then re-join the road at the traffic lights.

This is not a very elegant manouver but it avoids the tricky and uncontrolled alternatives to crossing both Stanley St and Vulture St. If heading furhter west use Deshon St, Logan Rd & Wellington Rd instead.

Head back west on the narrow footpath.

East Brisbane

"Beer O'Clock"

Total ascent round trip is 225m, not the 300+ on the elevation rpofile.
