Cross Western Blvd. May need to walk down embankment to get there.

Pullen Park, a Raleigh classic, includes train, historic carousel, and paddleboats.

Continue straight (left fork) on Hillsborough St.

Raleigh

State Capitol directly in front (guarded by cannon). Museums 1 block north on Edenton St.

Bus connections at City Market, 4 blocks east.

Amtrak station on Cabarrus St., 1 block north.

Branch right onto Lake Wheeler Rd.

State Farmers Market. Time to stock up on fresh produce?

Historic Yates Mill Park. Rebuilt working millwheel.

Lake Wheeler

Option: Left on Lufkin Rd. to motels, 1.5 miles.

Apex

End Center St, aka NC Bike 5. Left onto Salem St, aka old US 1, aka US Bike 1.

New Hill

Optional shortcut: Turn right (north). After crossing RR tracks, right onto American Tobacco Trail (blue sign).

Look left for Shearon Harris nuclear plant.

Bolin Creek Trail. A paved greenway of the Town of Chapel Hill.

Right onto paved trail, east side of highway. Holiday Inn & Days Inn, 0.5 mile N on Fordham Blvd (US 15-501).

Courtyard by Marriott, 1 block west.

Eagle Spur Trail: Abandoned rail corridor, unimproved, sandy, scenic, runs 2.3 miles south to Jordan Lake

Future section of the American Tobacco Trail. Passable surface runs 3 miles south to a missing trestle. Trail completion date 2010 est.

Begin paved portion of the American Tobacco Trail. 6.4 miles to downtown Durham.

Junction with Riddle Rd. Spur trail.

Durham

ATT ends, facing the American Tobacco building complex, now converted to mixed use, including restaurants. Take a walk up to the fountains under the Lucky Strike tower. Or see the Durham Bulls. <dbulls.com>

Duke Chapel, focal point of Duke University's gothic west campus.

Sarah Duke Gardens, 1 block north.

Duke's East Campus, formerly known as Trinity College.

Brightleaf Square, popular night district in renovated tobacco warehouses.

Bus connections to Raleigh via TTA (Triangle Transit Authority)

Amtrak station 2 blocks west. Marriott 1 block east.

Left on Ramseur St before RR tracks. Durham was founded here around 1850 as a stop on the North Carolina RR.

Right lanes

Riddle Rd. Spur heads 1.5 miles west. Was part of original 1905 rail corridor.

Turn left as you rejoin the American Tobacco Trail.

Left onto Cornwallis Rd., a popular bike commuting route.

Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC's largest technology employment center.
