The way points of this bicycle route:
We'll start outside Hillarys Shopping Centre on Flinders Av and head down to the coast.
Turn onto the main coast road, which as this point is known as Whitfords Av. There's no marked cycle lane but the shoulders are wide.
Go through the big roundabout outside Hillarys Boat Harbour...but watch for idiots who don't give way.
Mickey from Co. Tipperary and his wife from Sydney own the Voyage Cafe...great food and coffee!
Local residents refer to this part of Sorrento as 'Old Sorrento'...sounds less nouveau riche that way I suppose.
The Wild Fig Cafe is another good spot for breakfast of a Sunday, or any time really. At quieter times you'll see Jeff...the shaven-headed American dude who spends hours there working on his book.
Mettams Pool is a nice, sheltered, kid-safe swimming spot and a pretty decent snorkelling spot too. Pass by early enough and you'll see the 'polar bears' out for their morning swim.
Unless you're out very early, stick to the smooth red bitumen shared path now for the next 4-5 km because West Coast Hwy is just too fast and busy.
If you're not in a mega-hurry, follow the shared path down the hill to the Scarborough Beach area...wheeeeee!
Be extra careful of pedestrians all the way through the park that runs parallel to the beach. There are lots of walkers in the morning, beach users on a summer's evening and spaced out tourists from the adjacent hotel at all times.
Stay on the red bitumen shared path here that runs parallel to West Coast Hwy.
Cross West Coast Hwy at the lights and head straight up the Boulevard. There's a marked cycle lane for the initial hilly bit up from the coast.
When entering this roundabout, watch out for muppets coming into it from Empire Av and not giving way.
Hang a right at the Floreat Forum. Around here, I often catch up with a fellow commuter who rides a C40. Hello, if you're reading.
There's a lovely fast surface with a painted cycle lane all the way along Brockway Rd. The ATTA people have time trials along here on occasion.
If you feel like a little bit of a hill, take a left into Lemnos St here.
Left into Quintillan St (Google: this bit isn't called Camelia Av). Watch out for U-turning 4WDs here, parents having dropped off their little darlings at the Quintillan School.
Take the pedestrian underpass at Karrakatta Train Station. Slooooow and ring your bell (not that they'll hear you if they're wearing an iPod).
Cut through the cemetery...even if it's dark. If you do this every day you'll forget after a while that it is a cemetery...but do try to remember not to spit!
Starting in Spring and going right through to early Summer, watch our for swooping maggies when you're going up this hill.
As you approach the T-junction here to turn right, watch out for cars coming from your left that are turning right off Smyth Rd...they'll often cut the corner.
Protein drink, stretch, shower, Weetbix, cappuccino, start work, another cappuccino...
