The way points of this bicycle route:
This is a mostly very pleasant ride from Darlington Provincial Park (just east of Oshawa, Ontario), to Port Hope approximately 50km away. Unlike the shoreline west of here, it is still very rural and scenic. This route follows the "Waterfront Trail", so there are both on-road and off-road sections. I have included some suggestions for avoiding the off-road sections too. Start by riding out of the park through the main (eastern) gates. See the "comments" for more info.
Careful crossing the tracks.
You can save yourself some time/distance by just staying on South Service Rd. instead of going through the Darlington Generating Station. Also, the off-road sections are NOT paved, so you may want to consider that.
Sometimes they lock the gates here, so you can't go through the park and generating station. Easy detour: just go up Solina Rd. and ride along South Service Rd.
Another gate to the Darlingon Nuclear Generating Station. If you're riding east to west, this gate may be locked and you will have to detour along South Service Rd.
This is a beautiful off-road section of trail, mostly gravel. Some places are quite narrow. Alternately, you can probably go north over the 401, east along Baseline, and back down along Regional Rd. 14.
Another short off-road stretch that can be easily detoured, if desired.
The following section of trail was opened just recently. The Wilmot Creek Private Community still doesn't let you ride through, but a trail was built around it! There's no more detour up and over the 401!
Trail follows the tracks around the private community.
If you want to avoid a couple of off-road sections, you can ride north from here to Highway 2, then back down Regional Rd. 17 / Mill St.
There is a new subdivision under construction here (as of Sept. 2006), which disrupts the Waterfront Trail. There's a bit of a Hydro corridor that cuts through to Port of Newcastle Dr., but it may be very muddy. probably a better and easier idea to just detour around Toronto St. to Mill St. for now.
This is approximately the half-way point. Nice place to relax and enjoy the lake view.
Now entering "suburban" Port Hope!
