This day's journey begins in Cumberland and crosses the ridge and valley landscape with an end point of Frederick. Some of the ascents are about 1,000 feet. Catoctin Mountain in Frederick is the last mountain along the entire coast-to-coast trek. Most of the route is along the old National Road, which was the predecessor Route 40.
