The way points of this bicycle route:
Starting at Outspokin' Bicycles, near Dreher High School, get onto Ott Road. This ride is good for Southeast and Southerly winds, even East winds.
Right on Ott.
Left on Rosewood. Fairly heavy traffic, but wide enough.
Keep straight, enjoy the downhill.
Right on Garner's Ferry, and get ready to climb into your first interval!
Left on Leesburg, two turning lanes. Do not let traffic bother you here.
You can turn here, on Brown's Chapel, or continue much farther to Congress. I used to prefer Congress, but let's follow Brown's, so we can do Mt. Elon!
Bear left on Ridge Road, a fast road, but save some juice!
Left on Harmon. Alternatively, go right and cross Garner's Ferry onto Horrell Hill and pick us up later.
Harmon here is narrow, but people are very used to bikers, and so don't worry.
Alternatively, you can take Blue Johnson here, and loop back up the actual Horrell Hill to Horrell Hill road.
The most mythical cycling road in the state of South Carolina!! Where the Sunday ride got real ugly, where tempers flared and nice people turned into brutes. The hill up Mt. Elon feels straight up, long enough for you to blow up if you're not careful! It has one or two false tops. It's legendary!
The actual church is about here, but you're still climbing.
Tom's Creek is more punishment, but most continue to the next country road.
Left on Louis Leconte
A beautiful road, here, and you should be recovered from Elon by now.
Take the fork to the right, on Coward Road (don't pay attention to the name!).
Cross over Garner's Ferry to Old Congaree Run. Many roads out here are great, so this is just one variation.
The preverbial corn fields are out here, and it's great!
Take Old Ferry or Congaree to the right.
Left on Elm Savannah, one variation out here. These roads are regularly cycled.
Right on Cabin Creek, and you might see a group or two out here, doing something similar!
Meet up with Horrell Hill again, and take Lower Richland South.
Bluff Road is like the bike path of South Columbia. If you don't pass another cyclist, or a group, then it would be rare! It's a fast road, and if you've paced yourself, enjoy this flat roller all the way back downtown.
You can get on Shop Road here, via South Beltline, but if you're on a roll, just keep on.
The massive stadium will be on your right. Take George Rogers and loop around Assembly.
Rosewood is a bit of a climb after all that, so I take Assembly on from here.
Right on Wheat, passing under the ped/bike bridge.
Left on Pickens.
Right on Blossom.
Left on Chatham.
Back to the shop!
