The way points of this bicycle route:
Arthur St is one way east to west. This route does travel the wrong way down it. The alternative is to use Milperra Road, not a good option at almost any time of the day. Beware of oncoming traffic halfway down Arthur St where it bends. This area is also commonly used for dumping. May 2008 the road is badly potholed and breaking up.
Lots of pot holes and debri around here. Watchout for oncoming vehicles.
Right into Rickard Rd.
Left onto Newbridge Rd. Head towards the right turn lane, we need to go right at the next set of lights. At peak times this is going to be difficult to do as Newbridge Rd is busy and you have 3 lanes to cross. An alternative is to use the path under Milperra Bridge and cycle along the path/grass on the southern side of Newbridge Rd to Henry Lawson Dr.
Right into Henry Lawson Dr at the traffic lights. If you are at the front of the queue, you need to be right in the middle of the lane over the top of the sensor to trigger it.
Watch for vehicles on your left from the slip lane. May 2008 Henry Lawson Dr has just been resurfaced.
There is a narrow bridge ahead. There is no shoulder across it and traffic is typically fast and aggressive here, often crossing the double white lines to overtake a cyclist, even when theres trucks coming the other way. Either pick up speed to merge with the traffic and take the whole lane, or wait for a break.
Bridge, road narrows, no shoulder.
May 2008 Henry Lawson Dr has just been resurfaced. There is now a narrow but smooth shoulder. It used to be rough, loose and full of debri.
Veer left off Henry Lawson Dr across the grass to Ingram Ave.
Cross Whittle Ave, watch out for traffic.
Follow Ingram Ave around to the left. If you want a shorter route you could veer right instead and use the footpath to get to Bullecourt Ave.
Right into Whittle Ave.
Right into Keysor Pl.
Left into Bullecourt Ave.
Roundabout, cross Ashford Ave, continue along Bullecourt Ave. Shops, takeways nearby. Bakery opens early.
Watch out you don't get squeezed here near the right turn lane into the uni.
Roundabout, turn right into Horsley Rd.
Rondabout, veer left and use the slip lane to turn left into Beaconsfield St.
Intersection of Beaconsfield St and Marigold St. For some reason I can't fathom, lots of car drivers seem unable to see a cyclist approaching in clear view from the west, and will pull out in front of you.
Theres a pedestrian crossing and some small islands in front of you. To your right is a footpath to Wall Ave to the south.
Traffic lights, cross Queen St.
Road narrowing, pedestrian crossing. Lots of inattentive drivers at peak school start and finish time.
Traffic lights, cross The River Rd to continue into Doyle Rd.
Roundabout at intersection of Mackenzie St, Lester Rd and Doyle Red. Veer right to continue along Doyle Rd.
Roundabout, cross Sphinx Ave, continue along Doyle Rd.
Doyle Rd becomes Baddeley St at intersection with Arab Rd. Veer right to cross bridge over railway.
Left into Doyle Rd.
Roundabout, left into Howard St.
Parked cars and traffic islands ahead, its best to pick up speed and take the lane to avoid getting squeezed.
Traffic lights at intersection of Howard St, Memorial Dr and Padstow Pde, continue along Howard St . I find it best to use the right hand lane. Padstow Station is on your left, Beacon Cycles is coming up on your right, cafes and fish and chip shop nearby.
Bus stop on the left. Beacon Cycles bike shop on the right.
Bike lockers on your left.
Roundabout at intersection with Parmal Ave and Parker Lane, continue into Ryan Rd.
Traffic lights, cross Davies Rd to Trevone St.
At the end of Trevone St head to the grass lane between houses that leads to Salt Pan Creek. On summer nights look out for the large spider webs. A flock of magpies is often nearby (never had problems with them dive-bombing).
Left onto the path. Path is unsealed but normally in good condition.
Path reaches the eastern end of Meagher Ave. Head to the right towards the Salt Pan Creek boardwalk. Boardwalk can be slippery in the wet. Be aware that bikes are banned from being ridden on the boardwalk :-( . I still ride it, pull up for pedestrians. It is expected that late 2008 the K2RQ project will close the boardwalk for at least 9 months. Theres already been two weeks of closure during 2008.
Boardwalk starts.
Tight corner, path then goes under railway. People often fish here (don't eat the fish).
Right to use the bridge to cross Salt Pan Creek. There are about three steps up here, or a wheelchair ramp with tight turns. If you turned left instead and followed the boardwalk it takes you further up Salt Pan Creek and eventually a route to Bankstown.
Be very careful in the wet, the boardwalk can be very slippery.
Left onto the boardwalk.
Boardwalk ends, path continues. Seats, shelter, BBQ and water nearby.
Small bridge over creek. Sometimes you can see eels here.
Right onto the short path towards William Rd.
Left onto William Rd.
Left into Bennett Lane.
Right into Coleridge St.
You have reached Belmore Rd.
