This is the route I took from Broken Hill back to Sydney in May, 2008. As opposed to taking the main highway route, this route roughly follows the train line, occasionally running right next to it. The route is shorter than the main highway but involves long stretches of unsealed road with no available services. The tourist needs to be fully self supported and carry food and water sufficient for 2 days without resupply. I also carried a water purifier, which comes in handy for drinking at stock watering stations. I would recommend this route for anyone who wants to really get away from the traffic and push out some long, flat miles.by dfinnecy
