Bowland-Tatham traverse
by Mangobutty

The way points of this bicycle route:

Bolton-by-Bowland

Free car park next to excellent little cafe.

Bolton-by-Bowland

A superb, scenic, quiet rural ride.

Turn Right just before pub

Hill gets steeper here.

Bear Left staying on Lancashire Cycleway route 90

Very, very quiet road with lovely scenery. Take time to enjoy it.

Fast hairpin descent now to Slaidburn

Slaidburn

Can be busy with people feedeing the ducks so take it easy here.

Bear Right at War Memorial.

Road is now an official "Quiet Lane" and it really is!

Road is now undulating and there are a few steep sections.

Now you begin to see the long, steep section ahead as it climbs out of this valley.

Cross o' Greet

Not a place as such, just the name of the highest point on the Lancs Cycleway.

A superb, fast descent made safer by the fencing keeping the sheep off the road.

The scenery around here is superb on a clear day.

Watch out for this tight Right hander. You should see a rural petrol station/garage on your right immediately after the turn

You could have taken the busier B6480 and gone through High Bentham but this is quieter, less "bumpy" and more scenic.

Keasden

Blink and you'll miss it!

After going under railway bridge, turn Left headed for Austwick.

A65

Careful crossing what can be a busy road. You'll see the road you want slightly to your left on one side of a bridge.

Austwick

A pub and a shop here if you need provisions or food.

Passing camp site on your right, the road gets lumpy now.

Watch out for wagons from/for the quarry. You'll be away from them soon.

Wharfe.

Soon after Quarry entrance, turn Right up the initially steep hill.

Very quiet, scenic lane and you avoid all the traffic on the parallel Helwith Bridge to Settle road.

Little Stainforth

Camp site down the hill on your left here.

Stackhouse.

A collection of farms.

At this T junction, turn Right uphill for a very short distance.

Go Left down steep, short hill to Giggleswick.

Giggleswick

Lovely little town with a fabulous pub, shops etc.

At this roundabout, go straight ahead.

A

A65

Careful on A65 but the route only stays on it a matter of yards

Take first Right under railway bridge almost immediately on joining A65

Rathmell

Road undulates now to its end at Wigglesworth

Wigglesworth

A pub/restaurant and a post office/shop. Turn Right here.

At first Left hand turn, take this road up the hill.

Another quiet, lovely, scenic road to the finish now.

A steep descent to the bridge over the river.

And a steep, short last effort of the day away from the river.

Turn Right at T Junction and follow the road back home!
