The way points of this bicycle route:
Pine Valley ~ Theres a couple decent cafe's here. Remember it's a long way to the top of Mt Laguna! So if you need water or provisions, get them here!
Mesa Grande Store
Eastern Down Hill back towards 79 and Santa Ysabel
Pie Just ahead on Right. Check out the Santa Ysabel Mission on left.
Stope for Pie. Or to Dudley's for Barery Goods.
Good Rest Stop ~ Chem Toilets if the need arises.
Still hungry? Stop at Pizza Express.
Right Turn To stay on 78 79... You're on Main Street. Still hungry.... Try a Buffalo Burger, or another piece of pie, made with Julian Apples.
Little Detour before resuming the 79. No loss or gain in distance.
More Detour adjacent to the 79 with slight gain in distance.
Still on Old Cuyamaca
No Turn on Sunrise Yet. Why thats many miles away yet. Wail until Pine Valley
Still more pie at this restaurant. Rest rooms in back down the hill a bit, or in the cafe, if you're eating there.
Go left people, go left! You're heading for Pine Valley.
Still Hungry. There's toilet around here somewhere.
A bit of climb... You'll be climbing a plenty soon.
Here you go... A left turn and it's all up hill from here to the Village in Mount Laguna.
Nice overlook, pull into it and enjoy the view. Take a break if you like. A good spot to quench your thirst, and take in a gel.
You should strat to notice the change in shrubs and trees, as you climb into alpine altitude.
The trees start to change! You're the mountains. You'll see some really nice forest areas, and some fire damaged areas as well.
This Road will take you right on down to the frontage road on Highway 8. It's narrow and twisty. There are no cars! This road has many gates, and is generally closed to vehicular Traffic.
Here's the Store and the Lodge. There's also a cafe on left and probably back from here.
Somewhere along here is nice overlook on the right. You might want to stop and take photo or just gaze out towards the Desert regions far below.
There's a lot of burned out forest areas. Sadly, once was once lush forest is no more.
Don't turn here. This looks like a dirt loop. Just goes off to the right, and then rejoins the Sunrise Hwy again.
This looks like a pave road to the point. Might be worth a look see?!
Always some great views... Keep your eye out, and your eyes off the road, the views can be distracting.
This road looks interesting... But Continue straight. You should be getttng pretty tired by now. Just remember there's a lot of stunning scenery and superb downhilss to come!
I like this little pass here, it this is where I think I am! Almost back to the Hwy 79
Make a right and it's back to Julian and the Big Bad Banner Grade downhill run!
Well almost. Right turn here to continue to Borrego Springs via Banner Grade.
Julian has a pretty nice High School. I wonder if they winn all their home games, because their rivals, can't handle the mountain air?
The Downhill I promised. Look for Wynola Road on the left. A beautiful low traffic route to Julian that will be part of future route in the near future.
A pretzel of fun!
Now the Big LONG STRAIGHT Past Earthquake Valley onto Scissors Crossing and beyond.
DEAD STRAIGHT FROM HERE for awhile. How fast you going!? 41 MPH plus is pretty easy here. Be very careful if it's windy.
IF you turned here you would be heading to Ocotillo... Now that's a long ride south.
All part of Scissors Crossing. San Filipe Road is the S2. Takes you back to the 79.
Traffic can be a bit hazardous here. Boys with there sand toys heading for the desert! They drive way over the speed limit for some reason. If it's dark now, I hope you have plenty of lights. Downhill speed... Use caution!
Look for it, you're leaving Hwy 78
Nice Toilets and water is available. Stop and rest. Because you've got the last climb ahead. It's pretty short, and maybe sweet, if you still have legs.
Very nice retirement community.
That's the resort, just ahead on the right. Suberb place to stay! Great food, and very pricey!
Left to Borrego Springs road. If you miss this go on by the Casa De Zorro, and make the next left. That's Borrego SPrings Road.
Gear down and get aerodynamic. Will curve to the Right in a couple of miles or so. You may find relief from the wind at that point.
Slowly and hopefully out of the wind.
Nice Clean Rooms. Not a bad place to stay. Nice Folks.

This is great trainer. You can go in either direction. But climbing Montezuma is the preference. A great training ride for those of you who are planning to do a hilly double century. This little jaunt has a lot of great scenery and over 10,000 feet of climbing.
