The little plaza in front of the Barnes and Noble is a great meeting point. The Capital Crescent trail can be picked up just across Bethesda Avenue.
Leaving Montgomery County, MD and entering Washington DC.
Cross the bridge into the park.
Navigate this intersection however you feel safest.
Crossing the Key Bridge into Virginia. This is a wide sidewalk - don't ride on the bridge itself.
Welcome to Virginia!
Watch for traffic at the intersection! Wait for the light.
Mt. Vernon trail starts here
Cross the GW Parkway
Slow down!
Dismount and walk here. The trail gets tight and the traffic is close.
Stay left, otherwise you'll end up on the bridge.
Stop here for a potty break. Look up and see some great views of planes landing and taking off from Washington National Airport.
Scenic views of the airport on your left.
Nice water views on your left. Power plant to your right.
Entering Old Town Alexandria. Dedicated bike path ends and mixed path/street biking begins.
End at Big Wheel Bikes. Stop for a bite and a drink next door at Chadwick's. For the strong biker, follow the route back almost entirely uphill. Otherwise travel West on King's Street to the King Street Metro, or take the trail back to the National Airport Metro. Take the metro back to Bethesda Metro station and the start of the ride.

Capital Crescent Trail, starting in Bethesda and ending in Georgetown, Washington DC. Then connecting to the Mt. Vernon Trail in Virginia ending in Old Town Alexandria. Have a drink in Old Town before finding one of the recommended metro stations to take back to the start point (unless you enjoy 15 miles of uphill).
