Belmont-Burlington commute, around the hill
by dr2chase

The way points of this bicycle route:

Belmont

DANGER: Oncoming traffic from downhill has a stop sign, but does not expect you to veer left towards the bridge, and will pull into your path.

Cross the closed (to autos) bridge over the RR tracks.

Pleasant Street, which is anything but.

Begin big hill

Approach this intersection with some care; it was apparently designed by a cow, and then someone added nose-in (and butt-out) parking.

Arlington Heights. Note that if the light is red and there are peds, they will get their all-ways walk before the green. So if you are in a hurry, and there are peds, roll down to the crosswalk and be a ped. The Minuteman bike path (shown as RR tracks) can be reached by cutting through the Gold's Gym parking lot ahead and on your right. To the left (west) on Mass Ave, are Quadcycles, Lakota Bakery, and a vacuum cleaner shop. Across from Gold's gym (across Mass Ave), there's a more construction-oriented hardware store. To the right (east) on Mass Ave, you'll find Penzey's spices, and a little further along is a less construction-oriented hardware store.

Alternate path to Minuteman bike path, go to end of Nourse, and down the slope on the RHS.

Lexington

Hardware store at this corner.

Storm grate is now fixed, along with the other three on this stretch of road.

NOW FIXED: wrongly aligned slotted storm grate just north of Granger Pond Way, BOTH SIDES

This little section is my least favorite part of the whole route; it is two-lane, narrowing, uphill, no shoulder (a guard rail protecting pine trees and poison ivy) and the curve is somewhat blind. Traffic, naturally, takes none of this into account.

On the return, this section stinks because two lanes of cars leaving the intersection must merge into one, and it is uphill.

Trader Joe's, Petco, on your right.

Burlington

It's best to ride this on the RHS of the second lane or LHS of the first, so that you do not mix it up with cars heading for 128 at the last moment.

Approach this intersection on the 1-2 lane boundary, because lane 1 is right-turn-only onto Lexington St.

Dispersed mall on RHS includes Eastern Mountain Sports, Staples, Newbury Comics

Sun Burlington, Building 2
