The way points of this bicycle route:
at Bear Mountain circle, by the west end of the Bear Mt Bridge (bridge open to bicycles as of 2008)
to visit Bear Mountain State park (perhaps a food stop) or climb Perkins Memorial Drive to the top of Bear Mt -- turn Right at the traffic light.

The dirt surface is sometimes ridable on a road bike with 23 width tires, other times so eroded that it's not worth it, often requires some walking. The alternative of continuing on Rt 9W South has high-speed vehicle traffic, no ridable shoulder at some points, and climbs over a substantial hill.
