The way points of this bicycle route:
Start at N. Berkeley BART station
Right on Delaware
Right on 9th Street
Right from 9th street onto 8th street
Left on Buchanan. Be careful with traffic until you lose the people trying to get onto the freeway as you cross under it.
You will take Buchanan as it curves around Golden Gate Fields, giving you your first nice view of the bay.
Buchana technically ends as you turn left and ride through the parking lot until
Curve left onto Gilman.
turn right on the frontage road.
cut over to the trail that parallels the frontage road when possible.
Right onto Virginia, which may not be labeled. Go toward the Berkeley Yacht Harbor.
Right onto Marina Blvd.
Get on the trail encircling North Waterfront Park.
cut left on the path to hit the traffic loop and get onto Spinnaker Way.
Get back on Marina Blvd and take it right (south). The yacht harbor will be visible on your left in a minute.
Right on University Avenue for another bay view.
Abandoned Berkeley Pier in front of you. Investigate if you can get on it. Otherwise, left on Seawall Drive.
Cut through the parking lot on your left.
left to follow the waterline
Right onto University, still following the waterline.
Right on the frontage road.
Left to get on the pedestrian bridge that goes over I-80
We'll do a loop around the Berkeley Aquatic Park and then come back here and cross this bridge again to the west side of I-80. Clockwise or counter, your choice.
Here we are, on Bolivar and ready to cross I-80 over the ped bridge again. Go ahead.
Turn right on the frontage road now.
As you curve around the Ashby/ Hwy 13 interchange you enter Emeryville
Right on Powell for another jut into the bay.
Enter Marina Park
At the traffic circle, a bike path picks up across from the parking lot. Take it. and follow it along the waterline all the way back to where Powell meets the frontage road (where you came from)
Get back on Powell here; looks like the trail dead-ends.
Careful crossing under I-80 and being in heavy traffic. Possibly use the sidewalk until you cross Christie (where most traffic is turning right to go to Ikea, etc.)
Turn left at Christie, being careful, possibly using crosswalks depending on your comfort level.
Right onto Shellmound *Way*
Left onto Shellmound *Street*
Emeryville Public Market - great food court full of non-chain ethnic foods. Bathrooms too, of course.
Right on 65th Street
Right on Hollis
Left on 64th Street
Right on Doyle
Right through this parking lot where there obviously used to be railroad tracks (Union & Pacific line).
Left onto Hollis.
The block on your left ahead houses Emeryville City hall and a nice park behind it.
In the middle of the box stores, turn right on Yerba Buena Avenue, which looks just like a part of a parking lot here.
Becomes Mandela Parkway. You are about to enter a part of Oakland (West Oakland) that you should not bike through if it is dark. Bike lane starts here.
Passing under a number of freeway ramps.
At 32nd street, head for the bike/ped path in the Mandela Parkway median.
Congrats, you are at the West Oakland BART station!
Optionally tack on my round-trip route to a little-known city park, search Bikely for "Middle Harbor" in Oakland
