Avenue of Honour & River Circuit

The way points of this bicycle route:

Avenue of Honour

Starts at picnic ground. There is a signboard that describes the Lerderderg River and the native vegetation along its banks. This trail, like many others around Bacchus Marsh, resulted from a river management project to clear out introduced tree species such as Willow and Peppercorn. Over the years these trees and weeds such as Boxthorn had choked the riverbed and exacerbated flooding across the vegetable growing fields.

Avenue

Large River Red Gum, a fine example of this tree species which is native to this area.

Avenue

The Coimadai LandCare group planted most of the trees and shrubs you see next to the path. The growth of this vegetation has been spectacular over the last 2 years.

Avenue

In the distance to your right (north-west) you can see the hills that enclose the Lerderderg Gorge, from whence the river flows.

Avenue

Plans have been made to extend this trail upstream, but as at 2006 this has not been started.

Avenue

Follow the laneway back towards the Avenue of Honour - this is a public road. Take care as you approach the end of the lane - large trucks may be entering or leaving the vegetable packing sheds on your left.

Avenue

At this point you have to pass in front of the packing sheds. There is a path through the small garden (follow the sign). Stay off the bitumen in front of the sheds. Warning - the Avenue of Honour is a very busy road, so if you want to look at the memorial plaques on the Elm trees, watch out for traffic!!

Avenue

The sweep of Elm trees to your right were planted in 1918 to honour volunteers from the district who went off to serve King and Country during World War 1.

Finish up at the picnic grounds.
