Arrigoni-East Haddam Bridge River Route
by oehlda

The way points of this bicycle route:

This ride starts at the corner of Indian Hill and Sima Road.

Take a Left onto Little City Road.

there's been alot of residential building in the town I grew up in for the past 5 years. I'm not happy about it. The privatization of the commons is happening, and you can see it on the left as you turn onto Little City Road here.

ride past the stop sign. Little City Road turns into Foot Hills Road. This intersection is very beautiful, with a mill pond to your left, a farm house across the street, and a barn to your right. There were cows in the field to your right until about 10 years ago.

This is a good spot to take a swim. Miller's Pond is a local favorite.

steep.

Middletown

this area once had farms and farm houses, but is now populated with McMansions.

Ride through the stop light. Here you'll start to enter denser development; it'll feel more urban.

Stop & Shop for groceries. Take a Left onto Main Street.

Downtown Middletown. An excellent place to get some food before continuing on the journey.

At this point, you'll get on the pedestrian/ bike walkway to cross the bridge.

The Arrigoni Bridge has the longest bridge span in CT. It's also one of the only (if not the only) suspension bridge in CT of any kind.

Portland

Follow Route 66: Take a right onto Marlborogh Street.

this is the main street through Portland. Feel free to take a different street.

right around here you should get some good views of the "narrows" as this area of the CT river is called. You should also be able to see a power plant, which is reputed to be among the most polluting in CT.

East Hampton

Take a right onto Rt. 151.

Feel free to take a walk throught Hurd State Park. Go down to the river bank and see where ships were once built and launched.

take a right, if your wish, at this point to ride into Haddam Neck, a small, rural satisfying blip on the CT river.

steep.

haddam

Haddam is the only town in CT split by a major river.

east haddam

Take a right onto Johnsonville Road.

historic johnsonville. home to many olde tyme resorts

Right onto Rt. 149.

Take a right from 149 onto Rt. 82. This is East Haddam Center. Note the Goodspeed Opera House and the East Haddam Bridge, a pivoting drawbridge.

you can either go up the small road to the right or continue on 82 up to Tylerville where you can get some food. or you can wait until the Pilot House on 154.

Haddam

The Pilot House. Get a soda.

At this point you can continue riding north west along 154 or ride through the woods back to the start. To ride through the woods, take a left onto Walkley Hill Road, and a quick left onto Hayden Hill Road.

steep. Take a soft right onto Timms Hill Road.

Entering Cockaponset State Forest. This may be a dirt road.

At least there are some parts of Haddam that McMansions can't be slapped up on.

Right onto Hubbard Road.

Rt 9 Underpass.

Right onto Morris Road.

Left on Ponsett Road.

cross Rt. 81 onto Little City Road.
