The way points of this bicycle route:

Ballston

Start at the Ballston Metro. Or start nearby and head north on Quincy Street.

North Arlington

Military Road has some up and down hills.

Attention: Extremely steep hill going down to Chain Bridge. Take it slow. You'll need to stop at the bottom for traffic.

Chain Bridge

Wait for walk signal here. Cross bridge on upstream side.

Note worn footpath in woods from Canal Road up to the Crescent Trail. You will need to carry or walk your bike up the trail. Take care crossing Canal Road.

Crescent Trail

Smooth sailing all the way to Bethesda!

Great old brick railroad tunnel under MacArthur Blvd.

Bethesda

Note excellent historic railroad tunnel under Wisconsin Avenue.

Metropolitan Branch Trail

Trail is unpaved east of Bethesda. Possible on road bike. Keep your eye on the trail, though, for washouts and erosion.

Cross Connecticut Blvd. at the light.

Chevy Chase

Rock Creek Park

Old railroad trestle has been rebuilt for the trail. If you have time, stop and enjoy the view.

This section of trail was substantially improved in June 2007. Still unpaved, but in much better riding condition.

There's a short connection from Stewart Avenue to Kansas Avenue. Easy to find; follow the signs.

Talbot Avenue bridge

1-lane bridge. Watch for the occasional car.

16th Street and 2nd Avenue

Busy crossing, but no problem if you wait for the light. 2nd Avenue is not a busy street. Good choice to get to central Silver Spring.
