Thruogh the gate and the tunnel onto a farm track.
The farm track emerges back on NCN 12, turn R and follow the on-pavement cycle path towards Hatfield.
From the Great North Road traffic lights I follow the roads through Hatfield, which have decent cycle lanes and generally not too much traffic. You could use an old railway track to the Galleria and pick up the route there by turning R into Bull Stag Green, across the railway bridge and L onto the railway path.
Roads through Hatfield are quiet on Sunday and pretty safe most times
Anyone who took the railway path can rejoin here, after crossing the main rd by tunnel from the Galleria. Follow College Lane through the university.
Past the university, follow the cycle path beside the main road
Follow the track into a tunnel under the main road. Watch out for broken glass.

At the roundabout turn R into the village.
If you're hungry, the Crooked billet does good beer & food, but there's better to come!
Just before the big dual carriageway, take a L up to the bridge across the road.
Coming off the bridge turn right round towards the nearby turning.
Turn R into Colney Heath Lane
Take the first L, Barley Mow Lane.
Look out for the Plough. Best beer & food in the area. BUT it closes on Sunday about 3pm.
At Highfield lane turn R
At Puddingstone Drive, join the cyclepath.
Turn L at the signs for Highfield park
At the Drive, turn R & L into Hill End Lane.
Past the health club, turn R.
AT Drakes Drive turn L & R into Cell Barnes Lane
Turn first L into Nelson Avenue
AT the end of the road, turn R
AT St Vincent's Drive, turn L to the traffic lights.
At the lights turn R onto London Road (or take the cycle path on the pavement). Follow all the way back into St Albans.
