The way points of this bicycle route:
This is in reality about 3 and a half miles from my actual start, my house but there are shopping centers and the like around if you want to park near here... I'd recommend parking at the park and ride North of here at the Folsom and Power Inn light rail station. It is about 4 miles north of here and has a crappy RR crossing but parking is free and patrolled.
base of one of the few hills on this route. Enjoy the climb, say hello to the barking dogs on the NW corner of Escelsior and Elder Creek
Careful here... not much of a shoulder
No shoulder here... but nice greenery
Be VERY careful at this crossing.. high speed cross traffic!!
This is the entrance to the canal. To the left, not to the right. Go to the right and a rancher might shoot you. (tho it may be worth it, Laguna Del Sol... a nudist joint, is down there)
This was actually 19.2 miles from my real start. There is a park bench here with swastikas carved all over. I filmed part of my 6-23-2007 video journal here
If you are looking at the Sat/hybrid view, the strip mine at the left is now left fallow and actually quite pretty. They can only go down so far around the valley here because we have a high water table.
Careful.. this little part floods out in the Winter (notice the dry riverbed??)
There is a park and ride here if you want to have free parking and make this your trailhead. This does hook up to the American River Bike trail but that's not where I went on this ride.
Whew!! Top of a big hill... unless you wussed out and stayed on the flats
Yeee haw!!! Top of another big 'un
you should be doin' 30 mph without even pedaling now...
Careful on this crossing. You can continue to follow the canal from here to the bike trail, crossing Sunrise and then going through a tunnel under highway 50
Welcome to the bike trail. This side of the river is Goethe park
This little climb sneaks up on you... watch your shifting
Pause and look at the perty water. Be a perv and ogle the perty girls too (on the inflatables in the water... Summer and Spring)
STOP! Set an example, people...
Again.. STOP! Yes, that is a big hill up there but the law applies to cyclists too... STOP.. there's plenty of room to rebuild momentum
Say hello to Steve... BS for a while (oops, I didn't stop by there today...)
Work out.. lift heavy things for a half hour or so... take a breather
by, Steve!
STOP!!!! yes, you are on a downhill and you are going very fast... but I don't think you are invincible and you will lose a Bike vs car match... besides, it is the LAW!!
Sto... oh, you know...
This side of the river, the park is William B Pond. Wave hello you your virtual self as you pass by the purple line... wait, am I the only one that sees that??
Watch out for zombies...
If this all looks washed out, I think they took this pick several years ago when they were expanding the bridge. The only bad thing is....
...the only bad thing is the odor from the pit outhouse right here. There are flush ones across the river if you need to go. Cross on the Watt, it has nice bike lanes now and you can stay over there until Guy West, there is a bit of bike trail between Watt and the college as well.
Look at the perty Water... and the hotties. This is where I filmed the last part of my 6-23-07 video journal
CAREFULL!!!! No Bike lane from here to about 12th avenue!!! Think yourself thin and be aggressively defensive. -obey the traffic laws.
Now you can relax (a little) there is a bike lane.
Normally, I would end it here. this is about 2 miles and some change from my actual start/end but I will complete the loop and continue this route (for the sake of others) to the beginning.
WTF?!?!?!?!?!? I don't remember seeing a plane!?!?!?!? It musta been flying low below the satellite when they shot this pic.
And here is the end! Hopefully your car is still where you left it and it still has all of its component parts. My own total mileage was 46.40 but I started somewhere else
