On Lake Erhai (Erhai Hu). Xiaguan is the new hi tech city at southern end. Dali Old Town is about 30 km north along the lake. Bit of a tourist trap. Has some old buildings and made over pagodas.
He didnt branch off to Lijiang, home of the Naxi people of Yunnan. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijiang_City
Bridge across the Yangtze. Good restaurant on western side with views of the river valley. (Own experience)
On Yangtze River. Tiger Leaping Gorge is a cliffhugging drive away to the northeast. Road to Zhongdian heads northwest up tributary river. Jade Dragon Mountain is to the east - best viwed from Lijiang.
Tarted up and renamed as as Shangrila for the tourists. You can fly in.
Rejoins Yangtze Valley.

He camped along here, half way to Budongquan.
River crossing- braided rivers were shallow. Much mud and sand and gravel and a very hard day he said.
On highway to Tibet. Next day was through the Kunlun Mountains.
A steady 20 km climb from Budongquan on the Tibetan Highway, then downhil to Nachitai. 4767 m.
After Golmud, in Qinghai province, Edward Genocchio continued on through NW China, central Asia and eastern Europe to his home. I have also plotted his route from Dunhuang to Urumqi on Bikely at(../maps/bike-path/81797).
