The way points of this bicycle route:
Ride starts at the South Bank Cultural Forecourt, @ 6 am on Sunday October 15th.
Right onto Grey St
Left onto Melbourne St, briefly.
Entering the bus tunnel
The Busway swings south beside the South-East Freeway.
Downhill run into Buranda bus station ... careful of the central barriers.
Greenslopes bus station. I guarantee you will be having fun by now.
Holland Park West bus station. Please stay on the left of the busway, even up the long hill ahead of you.
Up the long, but gentle slope towards Griffith Uni.
Griffith Uni bus station. Top of the hill!
Garden City bus station.
Eight Mile Plains bus station. All good things must come to an end, and until Translink extend the Busway to the Coast, this is as far as we can go off-road.
Turning onto Miles Platting Road. We join the traffic for the first time, but there will be police patrolling this intersection.
Left into McKechnie St.
Left into Brandl, downhill sweeper. Be careful of a manhole cover in the middle of the line through this corner.
BQ researcher swooped by a magpie here in late August.
Left onto Logan Road.
Gentle uphill
Potentially a busy intersection, as Beenleigh Road joins in from the right.
Traffic lights.
More traffic lights, and at this intersection the dominant flow is definitely not with us. You would be very lucky to get through this one without waiting at a red light.
Right turn into Compton Road at lights.
Left turn into Baker St.
Right turn onto M1 service road.
Traffic lights. Intersection with Park Road.
On the Google satellite map, this enormous roundabout is covered in cloud. So what you also can't see is that this is presently a construction site for a huge Ikea. I mean huge. And there's water-filled barriers and trucks and roadworks everywhere. Take care!
Tricky roundabout, with traffic coming from everywhere.
Left onto Nujooloo Road.
Stop sign. Cars coming from left over a blind crest, so beware.
Underneath the Logan Motorway.
Left onto Clarks Road. Go past the soccer fields ... we're not stopping there this time.
Right turn onto service road.
After we go under the M1, left turn onto the service road again. This is where the V1 starts!
Right turn into Fryar Road, and stop at Eagleby South State School, for our first break.
Albert River Park, starting point for the 50km ride.
Left onto Distillery Road
Just keep going left at each of these roundabouts.
Approaching an enormous BP service station. Careful of traffic coming into and going out of said servo.
Left onto Stapylton-Jacobs Well Road.
Right turn onto Burnside Road. Visibility is good and there's a turning lane.
BQ route researcher (i.e. me!) got swooped by a magpie here while riding the route in late August.
Left back onto V1.
This roundabout we go "straight ahead" which looks like a motorway entry point, but isn't.
There is a bike/ped bridge here, which you can use or not. The road isn't usually busy.
At the top of one of very few hills on this route.
Turn off here to visit the Strawberry Farm, year-round home of the famous strawberry cone. Yum!
Le Mans kart track on your right.
Rolling hills on the V1 ... this is just about the best section of the V1, with a great surface, little traffic, trees for shade.
Left onto Foxwell Road. Going this way avoids the Dreamworld traffic.
Coomera train station
A short but fairly steep hill, with no road shoulder. Care required.
Right onto Shipper Drive at large roundabout.
Right onto Waterway Drive. This is Gold Coast City Marina, so there might be some traffic on a Sunday morning, with boaties/fisherfolk coming and going. It was very quiet on a Saturday morning during BQ's research ride.
Right onto Beattie Road at roundabout.
Left onto Dreamworld Parkway, but then be ready to pull into a rest stop at Coomera State School.
Coomera State School. Rest Stop 2. Refuel and fill your water bottles. Check out what the P&C has for sale.
Narrow bridge across the Coomera River.
Traffic lights at Siganto Drive and Hope Island Road. Straight ahead.
Left into Helensvale Road
Last hill on the route.
Roundabout. We go straight ahead.
A very big roundabout, with lots of traffic. Please take care!
Is it the Broadwater, or still just the Coomera River. I don't know, but this is almost the sea in some way shape or form.
Divided road.
Left into Matthew Flinders Drive.
Right at T-junction, onto Bayview St.
Bikelane on Bayview St, thanks to Gold Coast City Council.
Entry to marina. Careful of boaties.
Roundabout @ Lae Drive. Straight ahead.
Left from Bayview St onto Marine Parade.
Gold Coast Highway enters from left.
Left onto Marine Parade. Watch for car doors.
Left onto Gold Coast Highway (Marine Parade).
Left into Tuesley Park. Congratulations, you've made it!
Through the finish line, smile for the camera.
