We took our Brompton on a bus to Amherst and rode them back to near Worcester. It was a very hot and humid day (28C and 79% humidity) and the route is very hilly. This route is much nicer in general than the route we took a few years back (Route 9 almost the entire way) but hillier. It was a challenging ride but we got to see very pretty parts of MA.

My wife and I rode this route in 2009 as part of a cross-country tour. There are several stretches along busy Hwy 9 with no shoulder, but otherwise it is a scenic and low traffic route. Note that the initial stretch out of Amherst is on a bike path. There are a lot of hills on the route and some of them are quite steep.

We basically took Route 9 all the way to Worcester. Some parts of Route 9 were good (big shoulder space) but there were lots of fast cars and parts of the route had no shoulder. We'll probably take another route to Worcester next time. The route was also quite hillie but the shortest route to the MBTA commuter rail.
