| L.A. Bikeway Alternate | wildbell | May 1st | United States > California > North Hollywood | 11.7km | Commute, Recreational, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, Intermediate, Low traffic, High traffic, Safe, Urban, Rural, Scenic |
| If riding the pitch dark L.A. River Bikeway at night isn't first on your list, until the city gets its act together and fixes the light system, here's an alternate that will bring you up along Riverside Drive through Griffith Park back to the northernmost bikeway access point near the 134 Freeway. | |||||
| Silver Lake To USC Via Downtown | wildbell | May 1st | United States > California > Los Angeles | 8.7km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, High traffic, Safe, Urban |
| Silver Lake to USC | wildbell | May 1st | United States > California > Los Angeles | 7.4km | Commute, Onroad, Basic, High traffic, Safe, Urban |
| NoHo 2 DoTo | wildbell | Apr 16th | United States > California > North Hollywood | 24.5km | Commute, Recreational, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, Intermediate, Low traffic, High traffic, Safe, Urban, Scenic, Touring |
| Starting from the western end of the Chandler Bikeway, this route takes the rider into and across Burbank to Riverside Drive and then along the L.A. River Bikeway into Elysian Valley before crossing the river and heading into downtown from the north through Chinatown. | |||||
| LA BMP - Crescent Heights | wildbell | Mar 21st | United States > California > Los Angeles | 4.3km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Intermediate, Low traffic, Safe, Urban |
| La Cienega Boulevard is notorious for its bike unfriendliness and Crescent Heights provides a great and much safer alternative getting you north and south. The staggered section can get a cyclist to Venice Boulevard by bypassing La Cienega under the 10 Freeway. | |||||
| LA BMP - The Runaround | wildbell | Feb 25th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 5km | Steep, Difficult, Rough, Not Bike, Unsafe |
| I am becoming increasingly disillusioned that these master plan update workshop meetings are just going to run everyone around in circles accomplishing little. Yay Los Angeles! | |||||
| LA BMP - The Abandoned Class III Connector Joining the Chandler Bikeway to the Riverside Bike Lane and the L.A. River Bikeway! | wildbell | Feb 21st | United States > California > Burbank | 5.2km | |
| Thanks to a bunch of NIMBYs (who equate the presence of cyclists with increased crime and traffic) and their councilmembers, the city of Burbank in October 2006 voted to abandon approved plans for a Class III bike route to join the Chandler Bikeway with the Riverside Class I bike lane and ultimately the Los Angeles River Bikeway. Though the council directed the city's planning department to explore alternatives to this date 16 months later the whole thing remains shelved because of fear of the same outcry from NIMBYs on other residential streets. And here I thought Burbank was a bike-friendly place. | |||||
| LA BMP - Westchester to Silver Lake | wildbell | Feb 8th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 22.2km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Intermediate, Difficult, High traffic, Rough, Safe, Unsafe, Urban |
| Even with its shortcomings and pockets of poorly maintained roadway, Washington Boulevard is a nice corridor with less evening vehicular traffic to compete against, making this one of the regular ways I get home after work. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake to Westchester | wildbell | Feb 8th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 22km | Commute, Smooth, Intermediate, High traffic, Safe, Unsafe, Urban |
| This is an alternate work commute route that primarily involves Hoover down to USC and then Jefferson across town. The most bike unfriendly area is where westbound Jefferson crosses La Cienega. | |||||
| Roundtrip Commute - Silver Lake to Westchester and Back | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 45.4km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Steep, Basic, Difficult, Offroad, Low traffic, High traffic, Rough, Safe, Unsafe, Urban |
| With the exception of some minor variations, this is pretty much how I bike between home and work. | |||||
| LA BMP - Troublespot: Beverly @ Highland | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 0.1km | Commute, Onroad, Difficult, High traffic, Rough, Unsafe, Urban |
| On the southside of Beverly Boulevard east of Highland Avenue is a segment of uneven roadway near the curb that poses as danger to cyclists. | |||||
| LA BMP - Troublespot: Beverly Boulevard in the vicinity of St. Andrews Place | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 0.3km | Commute, Onroad, Difficult, High traffic, Rough, Unsafe, Urban |
| Traversing the southside of Beverly Boulevard between Wilton Place and Western Avenue by bike is something I would never recommend. The amount of curbside deterioration of the roadway coupled with the short-term patching that the Bureau of Street Services provides qualifies this stretch of roadway as some of the most dangerous in the city. | |||||
| LA BMP - Troublespot: Silver Lake Reservoir Bike Lanes | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 1.9km | Commute, Recreational, Onroad, Basic, High traffic, Unsafe, Urban, Scenic |
| On both east and west sides of Silver Lake Boulevard alongside the reservoir there are varying degrees of roadway cracking that cyclists must negotiate around and over. It's a shame that with the implementation of the pedestrian pathway there are no plans to repair the extensive level of damage and thus make these important and well-used Class I lanes safer and more enjoyable. | |||||
| LA BMP - Trouble Spot: Melrose @ Normandie | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 0km | Commute, Onroad, Difficult, High traffic, Rough, Unsafe, Urban |
| On the southside of Melrose immediately east of Normandie is some of the most harrowing and seemingly never-resolved and ever-worsening potholes in the city. Occasionally the city's Bureau of Street Services will fill in the holes with asphalt but the result is uneven and extremely dangerous. It's time for BOSS to quit applying a short-term bandage to this wound and elect to perform surgery that will make this corner safer to traverse. | |||||
| LA BMP - Trouble Spot: Jefferson @ La Cienega | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 0.6km | Commute, Onroad, Difficult, High traffic, Unsafe |
| Westbound on Jefferson across La Cienega is a notoriously bike-unfriendly in large part to the narrowing of the northside traffic lanes and defunct rail tracks that must be traversed. This may very well be resolved if a bikeway is included in the Expo Line plans, but until then, something needs to be done to give cyclists greater safety. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake to San Gabriel Mission | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 19.9km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, High traffic, Safe, Urban |

| LA BMP - Sherman Oaks to Griffith Park | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Sherman Oaks | 17.2km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, Low traffic, Safe, Urban |
| Pretty much the shortest distance between Sherman Oaks and Griffith Park. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake to Bicycle Square | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 3.8km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, High traffic, Safe, Urban |
| Home of the Bicycle Kitchen, Orange 20 Bike Shop, Pure Luck restaurant, and Scoops Ice Cream, Heliotrope and Melrose has emerged as the unofficial center of the city's burgeoning bike culture and should be officially recognized as such. This is my usual route there or back. | |||||
| LA BMP - 4th Street Bicycle Boulevard | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 5.9km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, Low traffic, Safe, Urban, Touring |
| If there was a single street in the city that the masterplan should devote some serious attention to it is the crosstown length of 4th Street from Hoover to Cochran. Of all the east/west streets it is the most ready-made to be converted into a bike boulevard the likes of which can be found in Berkeley, Calif. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake to Hollywood | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 6.5km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Basic, High traffic, Safe, Urban |
| One of the simpler ways to get into the section of Hollywood north of Hollywood Boulevard. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake to Atwater Village to Glendale | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 6km | Commute, Onroad, Basic, High traffic, Rough, Safe, Urban, Touring |
| Big sections of the bike lane on Griffith through Silver Lake are in pretty bad shape but this is still one of the quickest ways to get on the otherside of the river and into Atwater Village and Glendale. | |||||

| This 10-miler utilizes the L.A. River Bikeway. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake To Santa Monica | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 27km | Commute, Recreational, Onroad, Smooth, Intermediate, High traffic, Safe, Touring |
| Roughly a 17-mile route that traverses Fountain Avenue westward to La Cienega then Santa Monica Boulevard to Beverly Hills where you'll note that Santa Monica Boulevard is then righteously avoided by arcing over Carmelita back to where Santa Monica Boulevard becomes more bike friendly and safer across the new transit corridor and all the way out to Ocean Avenue. | |||||
| LA BMP - Silver Lake to Chinatown to Highland Park to Garvanza to South Pasadena | wildbell | Feb 7th | United States > California > Los Angeles | 18.2km | Commute, Onroad, Smooth, Intermediate, High traffic, Safe, Urban, Touring |
| You'll want to look closer at this multi-destination 11-mile passage because it features some alternate and unique options that help bypass some of the steeper routes up into Pasadena. | |||||
