Derived from Finger Lakes Cycling Club touring routes (http://www.flcycling.org/touring/rides/index.htm). 1) The only major climb in this route is much too early, less than a mile from the start of the ride. There is very little chance to get a rhythm going first. CR 76 rises over 400 feet in about a mile. Then the route slowly rises after that before descending down Italy Hill Rd. It might be better to start in Penn Yan, get a 20-mile warm up on NY 54, and then tackle the CR 76 hill. 2) The only other significant climb in the route is Bluff Rd. It rises about 250 feet in a little over half a mile. Just east of the top, the road is unpaved, but only for a short time, and it is still smooth enough, even after moderate rain, to do on a road bike with skinny tires, if you just slow down a bit. 3) West Lake Road and East Lake Road run parallel to NY 54A and NY 54 respectively and allow you to avoid the traffic of those roads, although the lake roads are not quite as smooth or as fast as the larger roads. The lake roads go down through the residential areas along the lake, while the state roads ride up higher away from the waterfront development. Actually the condition of the lake roads is quite decent, and the traffic on the state roads is not bad, especially given the roads’ sizeable shoulders, so either route is fine for cycling. 4) There is another road, Keuka Village Road, that appears on the map to parallel NY 54 like East Lake Rd. However, it was closed to through traffic as of 11/18/06.

Derived from Gear-To-Go Tandems cue sheets (http://www.gtgtandems.com/sttr/cuesheets/), but rerouted to start/end in Gang Mills. Three significant climbs, including Harris Hill going past the soaring center and National Soaring Museum, just off the Soaring Hill Drive crossing.

Derived from Gear-To-Go Tandems cue sheets (http://www.gtgtandems.com/sttr/cuesheets/). "The Metric Century Challenge route consists of a series of four hill climbs (going from hardest to easiest) with great downhill runs. The ride also follows rolling terrain along streams with wetlands, birds and wildlife, and back along the Chemung River. There are some rather steep (5-10%) grades, but other than one 1-mile long climb of 6%, they are less than 1/4 mile each. The 3-5% grades vary in length from 1/6 mile to 3/4 mile. The first hill climb is tough, but the top provides a panoramic view back into Elmira and the Valley... Note: Between the 19 1/2 mile and 45 1/2 mile convenience stores there are no facilities available. There is an ice cream stop at Bradley Farms, 4.5 miles before the finish if you must!"
