| Skyline Drive - 70 miles | huntley | Aug 10th | United States > Virginia > Front Royal | 112.4km | Onroad, Smooth, Difficult, Low traffic, Rural, Scenic |
| Seventy miles on Skyline, from Front Royal to Pinnacles. Bring a headlight / taillight for the short but very dark tunnel 32 miles into the route. Also bring bug spray if you plan on taking a breather at the top of Pinnacles. | |||||
| Antietam Battlefield | huntley | Jun 29th | United States > Maryland > Frederick | 108.1km | Onroad, Rural, Scenic |
| A 67 mile variation on the PPTC route, Antietam Scout, that is improved by wandering through the battle field, whereas the club ride oddly skips Antietam by staying on the main road. The ride starts and ends at the Urbana Maryland park and ride, which is just off the Urbana exit from route 270. There is a great coffee shop at mile 19.9 in Middletown and a market at mile 37.3 in Sharpsburg. Note that, at around mile 55, Mountville road crosses a busy route 15 at a traffic light that is at the bottom of a fast descent. (thanks to brandolph!) | |||||
| Windsor Knoll - 100K | huntley | Jun 29th | United States > Maryland > Frederick | 94.2km | Onroad, Intermediate, Rural, Scenic |
| Somewhat hilly metric century from Windsor Knoll Elementary School, just north of Hyattstown Maryland. (Thanks brandolph) | |||||
| Catoctin Mountain Climber | huntley | Jun 29th | United States > Maryland > Frederick | 71.1km | Onroad, Smooth, Steep, Difficult, Rural, Scenic |
| Climbs up Catoctin Mountain near Camp David. Scenic route with two steep climbs. Transcribed from another site, originally posted there by mdoughty. | |||||
| Blue Ridge Extreme- Metric Century | huntley | Jun 19th | United States > Virginia > Nellysford | 101.3km | Smooth, Steep, Difficult, Rural, Scenic |
| This is the approximate route of the 2008 Blue Ridge Extreme Metric Century (100K). Start is at the bottom of Wintergreen on Beech Grove Rd. This ride is very hard unsupported--there's no opportunity I know of to buy food or water. The final hill up Wintergreen is monstrously steep--the average (not marginal) grade over the last 4 miles exceeds 10 percent. | |||||
| Catoctin 100K | huntley | Jun 18th | United States > Maryland > Frederick | 97.6km | |
| Hilly metric century from Frederick, MD. These are some of my favorite roads and hills. Be especially careful on the descent of Highland School road, remembering that there can be deer, oncoming cars, and occasional gravel on the pavement. There are stores at mile 18.6 (in Wolfsville) and mile 45 (a Sheetz in Thurmont just east of route 15) (thanks to B. Randolph!) | |||||
| Blue Ridge Challenge - With Cue Sheet | huntley | Jun 17th | United States > Virginia > Marshall | 88.5km | Recreational, Onroad, Difficult, Rural, Scenic |
| This is the popular Blue Ridge Challenge route, transcribed originally by user GeoffreyGee, presumably from the bikewashington.org website. I'm adding a cue sheet. The first 20 miles are rolling hills through Virginia countryside. Then there's a climb up to the DHS facility at Mt. Weather, followed by a downhill and more rolling hills and one surprisingly difficult, short, climb on Leeds Manor Road. | |||||
| Skyline Drive - 40 Miles | huntley | Oct 5th | United States > Virginia > Front Royal | 33.6km | Onroad, Difficult, Low traffic, Rural, Scenic |
| Start at the base of Skyline Drive, and keep biking up for approximately 20 miles until you reach the top big Hogback Mountain (it's a huge overlook, and if you turn around, you can see a little weather station on one of the peaks). | |||||
| Hagerstown - Mason-Dixon Doublecross | huntley | Jul 10th | United States > Maryland > Hagerstown | 63km | Onroad, Intermediate, Low traffic, Rural, Scenic |
| A 40ish mile bike ride through the rolling hills of Northern Maryland, to Waynesboro, PA, and back. | |||||
| Poolesville - Sugarloaf | huntley | Jul 9th | United States > Maryland > Poolesville | 52.1km | Intermediate, Low traffic, Rural, Scenic |
| This 32 mile ride starts at Poolesville H.S. and takes you north along Peach Tree to 270 before doubling back. A large number of fairly steep hills populate the middle third of the ride, culminating in the optional climb up Sugarloaf mountain. The last third of the ride is fairly flat, although there is little shade to be had along this section. | |||||
| Poolesville - Around Sugarloaf | huntley | Jul 9th | United States > Maryland > Poolesville | 60km | Onroad, Intermediate, Rural, Scenic |
| This route is an approximately 38 mile route circling around Sugarloaf mountain (visible from many different points along the ride). It's a very pastoral ride, except for the random McMansion. There are a few moderate hills | |||||
