It is not that bad a route. The only part that is a busy road is the bit crossing 285 and early morning on weekend it is pretty empty

The mtn biking as far as Marble is great. A sensible person might take the bus up from Carbondale to Aspen...

This is the route via Taylor Pass and Star Pass. It is a reasonably epic undertaking! Couldn't really see the trail on the map here for a portion of the section after Star Pass, so the route is an approximation there.

This is a great, almost car free, long and scenic route. This version follows the paved path for the most part, though stays on River Road for a portion - I think that is a great riding road. But one can stay on the path the whole way to avoid all cars and some up and down. The path for several miles upstream from Woody Creek is not paved, though it is hard packed and ridable even by road bikes.

My favorite ride out of Aspen. Low traffic, could not be more scenic! At the very end of pavement there is a bridge over the stream which is a great place to relax for a moment before returning.
