LA BMP - Sepulveda Blvd SFV to Westwood Ov3rTheHill Feb 18th 2008, 09:31 7.3km
  • High traffic
Note to Planners: It is important to defend this route against traffic plans that would make it unbike-able; the "reversible lane" proposal for Sepulveda Blvd may make biking Sepulveda more dangerous. For the entire west SF Valley this is the way over the Santa Monica Mountains into West LA, Santa Monica and the beaches.
LA BMP Southbound, North Hollywood to Hollywood, Late Night Only, *DANGEROUS* Ov3rTheHill Feb 18th 2008, 08:26 10.4km

** VERY DANGEROUS ** Late night only! NO BIKE LANE, NO SIDEWALK, CARS INCHES TO YOUR LEFT, you will be riding in the gutter or fighting very impatient aggressive car drivers. Cars come off 101 Freeway onto Cauhenga ON YOUR RIGHT and you are dumped into weaving lanes!! ** TAKE THE RED LINE INSTEAD (Start and End Points are at Red Line stations) ** But the Red Line is closed from about 1 AM to 5 AM.

All times UNSAFE but how else to get over the hill from Hollywood back to SF Valley after the last Red Line train at 12:30 AM? Roadway narrow at places during ascent from Hollywood. Car drivers aggressive and impatient.

On South side of Lassen bikes must use sidewalk but sidewalk has steep slopes at the rail grade crossing.
LA BMP NW Bike Path Request as part of Orange Line North Extension Ov3rTheHill Feb 18th 2008, 03:51 0.3km
  • High traffic
  • Not Bike
This ex-railroad right of way presently used as part of an RV park would make an excellent bypass for kids on their way by bike to the nearby Jr. High School as well as bike commuters coming out of the Chatsworth Metro Rail station (which station is right across Lassen to the North). This extension of bike path should be made part of the Orange Line Northbound extension. It would bypass heavy car traffic on Lassen and on Owensmouth between Lassen and Marilla. Until then, levelling the rough sidewalks on adjoining Owensmouth and Lassen would be good interim improvements; those sidewalks have rough spots and the streets are too narrow to accommodate bikes.
LA BMP-West SF Valley Owensmouth North-South Commute Ov3rTheHill Feb 18th 2008, 02:54 10km
  • Commute
  • High traffic
* This route has heavily trafficed choke points (Lassen to Marilla, 500 ft North of Saticoy, Vanowen to Victory) but this rider far prefers Owensmouth to Topanga (the MTA's designated North-South route for this area!!) because of Topanga's heavy trucks which give off sooty diesel exhaust, kick up road dust and make for a noisy, inhumane route. Canoga is not a safe alternative in that auto and truck speeds are high and many long stretches are 3 lanes of cars and trucks but no bike lane. * An Orange Line North-South busway extension is planned parallel to this route! Request the MTA include a bike path as part of the extension of the Orange Line. * Lots of shade on thir route compared to Topanga or Canoga due to Residential shade trees. None on Topanga or Canoga, lots on Owensmouth. That matters a lot in 100+ degree F SF Valley summers, which are often 10 or more degrees hotter than downtown LA summers.
