Recommend ride from Whitetop to Abingdon, VA. It is mostly down hill. There are several bike shops that will transport you and your bike to Whitetop, for a fee, $ 10.00 to $20.00 depending the number of people needing transportation. Damascus is a nice place to stop for lunch and relax. http://www.vacreepertrail.com/

The route is 70% off road and 30% on-road. There is little traffic along the way, but cross walks on some street can be challenging. (Recommend walking) You will travel through four city, Lansing, Calumet City, Village of Burnham, and Chicago. Along the way you will pass and see some beautiful sites. This is a 25 mile One-way trip. I grew up in the area, and use to ride to the loop often, before bike paths, or routes. We stayed in Lansing, Motels much, much cheaper. I and one other person rode this rout and it was great. There are great places to stop and look around. Our journey started at 8 AM, which took 4 ½ hours stopping on the way before arrive in the Loop area. We departed after lunch at 1 PM, and stopped only for water and personal, took us 2:15 to get back.

The bike path is off road from the Welcome Center to route US 17 bridges (Over pass). This portion is safe for all ages. From route US 17 bridges (Over pass) to South Mills, there is a designated bike route (3 feet wide) along the road. Vehicle traffic is minimal, but still unsafe for children, because the vehicles that use it may travel faster then posted speed limit

This bike route is mostly on a designated bike route. (other then for TWO times) with little to NO vehicle traffic. There is vehicle traffic and heavy at times, along the street that parallels the bike path. It should not affect you on the ride, other then at cross walks. Most intersections are lighted, press to cross and have cross walks.
