This is a great route for getting used to road riding if you have only ridden rail trails before. I rode it from Seymour one day and back the next as the train was not running past Seymour.

The hills are not too steep and the roads are wide; even the freeway section has a wide strip alongside that keeps you well away from the cars. The big rig truckies are great and give you a wide berth. (The smaller the truck the more they resemble car drivers) For most of the route I encountered about one car every 5 minutes. This on Tuesday Wednesday in late October when the scenery was beautiful after a period of rain.

Almost the whole route is tree lined on both sides, but the breeze still gets through.

There is a nice cafe in Longwood where the owner's daughter is a competitive cyclist. There is a gerneral store in Anderson St in Avenel at the end nearest the route (not the one near the freeway) that has blood plum slice to die for. Otherwise you are on your own for food water and toilets. (The public toilet in Longwood is under construction and I never found the one in Avenel) There is plenty of bush along the way.

Don't miss the river trail in Seymour, particularly the part to the West in the early morning or evening...
