This is the full route of a multi-day ride from Rooty Hill (Western Sydney) to Mitchell (ACT), taking mainly back roads, that a few of us did in April 2009. Most of the route is along Bitumen roads, with 30 km of unsealed road thrown into the mix.
The route described here is set out as a 4 day ride, traveling up to 90 km on 3 of those days. Each of the towns selected has pubs, so it would be possible to do the route without carrying a tent and associated equipment (Note that the pub at Marulan only has 2 rooms though!). Note that each of the towns selected are close to the Hume or Federal Hwys and/pr railway lines. If camping, it may no noisy!
However, the route could be done as a more relaxed 5 day tour, possibly staying at The Oaks or Thirlmere on Day 1, Moss Vale or Bundanoon on Day 2, Bungonia on Day 3 and Collector on Day 4. Note that there is no formal accommodation at Bungonia. On a previous occasion I arranged to camp at the hall and use it's facilities.

Note that this route goes past a number of railway stations. However, between Moss Vale & Goulburn the trains are very infrequent and virtually don't run at all on weekends. See Cityrail Southern Highlands Timetable for details.The end of the ride at Mitchell is less than 10km from Canberra Railway station. If catching the Canberra Explorer train from Canberra or Goulburn, bikes need to be boxed. If catching the non-explorer train anywhere between Sydney & Goulbun bikes can just be wheeled onto the train (Theoretical maximum of 2 bikes per train, although this is not often enforced).
