    By adding two fuctions, insert-route and reverse-route, you add immense power to your offering.

    insert-route lets people copy routes and then modify them as well as piece together routes. The route can be inserted either at the end, or (preferably) before/after the chosen point, much as you insert points now. All the points can be simply inserted. Of course the trick is identifying the route to insert. Perhaps this isn't too hard.

    reverse-route is a very nice primitive that makes insert-route even more powerful for people constructing routes from route-lets (snippets, sub-routes). You simply reverse the order of all the points.

    Certainly a "Reverse the Route" feature would be great for out and back rides. Currently, the system seems to gets wonky when you try to insert points going back along the back portion of an out-and-back route. I do agree that from a rudimentary standpoint we should all be able to figure out our reverse route mileage and elevation changes, but I like the idea of that feature being available.

    Still waiting on this feature :/ Please!

    tmcian -
    consider using a spreadsheet rather than notepad
    download from firefox (puts in tabs where you need them)
    cut and past into a spreadsheet
    insert a column - column a
    add numbers 1,2,3,... in column a (data fill in lotus)
    sort the whole thing in revers on column a
    regenerate the cumulative distance column from the segment increments column
    that's it

    Peter,

    here is a spreadsheet I use to combine 2 routes:
    Sub MergeGPXfiles()
    Trkseg = True
    Open "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Download\Bicycle_Maps\GPX\Sunshine-Coast-Airport-to-Caloundra.gpx" For Input As #1
    Open "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Download\Bicycle_Maps\GPX\Caloundra-to-Glass-House-Mountains.gpx" For Input As #1
    Open "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Download\Bicycle_Maps\GPX\Output.txt" For Output Shared As #99
    Do While Not EOF(1)
    Input #1, Record
    If Record = "</trkseg></trk></gpx>" Then Trkseg = False
    If Trkseg = True Then Print #99, Record
    Loop
    Trkseg = False
    Do While Not EOF(1)
    Input #1, Record
    If Record = "</trkseg></trk></gpx>" Then Trkseg = False
    If Trkseg = True Then Print #99, Record
    If Record = "<trkseg>" Then Trkseg = True
    Loop
    Record = "</trkseg></trk></gpx>"
    Print #99, Record
    Close #1, #2, #99
    End Sub

    Peter,

    regarding reverse order
    when I export to .gpx I get lines like:
    - <trkpt lat="-26.800477068" lon="153.14289093">
    <ele>19</ele>
    </trkpt>
    Not very easy to do in a spreadsheet as they are on multiple lines
    NOTE: I use IE but that should not make a difference to the .gpx file

    I was suggesting using a spreadsheet to reverse a cue sheet, not the gpx file. Reversing the gps file is quite a bit easier. Here is how I did it with excel:
    1 drop the gpx file into excel
    2 delete the first line
    3 move the first <trkpt lat... over 3 columns to line up with the rest of the data below it
    4 put consecutive numbers 1,2,3,... (data fill) down the column before the first <trkpt... down to the last <trkpt...
    5 select the numbers range you just generated plus the cells just to the right
    6 sort in descending order on the number column
    7 erase (delete) the consecutive numbers range
    8 save as "Formatted text (space delimited)(*prn)"

    Your elevation data will be ignored. If you care you need to import the file into Bikely and regenerate the elevations.

    I've just joined Bikely, and (after actually plotting maps) joining route segments and reversing routes were the first things I looked for. If I could define a dozen or so routes, I could create 90%+ of my cycling by gluing them together is various combinations, and I often return home on the same, or very nearly the same, route as going out.

    Having said that, "Auto-follow the road" makes the interface pretty usable - as long as I remember to turn it off for paths and cut-throughs that Google doesn't recognise as roads.

    Just like to reinforce the feature request for "insert route", and "reverse route".

    I've just done some 20 rides routes on Bikely.com for our riding group, with several to go. The thing is we always meet at a specific suburban carpark before we cycle out of the city to our favourite hinterland rides. Plotting that suburban bit over and over again takes 80% of the time for each ride route.

    Another suggestion - an "undo" when using the "Auto-follow the road". I can understand this is only as good as the data as Google Maps provide, but from time to time it goes ballistic over a single click, requiring dozens of "delete last point" or "Alt x's" to get back and redo manually with "Auto-follow the road" unselected.

    Awesome site, keep up the good work !
  3.
    Follow-the-road segment undo is coming.

    We will get to these route-editing functions in due course too. They're an obvious good idea.
  4.
    I have just started trying out this program this morning for the first time. Initially, I found that drawing a route was pretty easy and straightforward. But, retracing part of a route was not at all easy. I have still not figured it out. How do you retrace all or part of a bike route. It appears from some of the comments displayed in this forum that you have to be a computer whiz to accomplish this task. Help?

    I'd be a big fan of the route reverse feature. I have a route that needs to be turned around. We are not going up any of teh hills that the route has us going up. I imported this puppy and I meant for it to be clock wise, not counter.

    Count my vote twice!

    Deleting an auto-follow segment would be massive improvement. eg if you could use a box shape selector to cut a section (perhaps then even use to copy/paste on a different route) that would be handy but any means to delete a segment is going to help. Reverse route nice to have (as would adjusting which is the start point) but will try that excel trickery.
    Thanks for really useful tool.
  5.
    Reverse route would be very helpful for long rides with a return.
