I'm new to Bikely and wonder, is it possible to create a "truck" route off of which are "side" routes? For instance, I have a "trunk" route that takes me across town. I'd like to show the many places one could reach from this "trunk" route - grocery stores, movie theaters, shops, that sort of thing - without creating a new route for each or making misleading mileage due to the seeming necessity of taking the route out and back to the trunk.

What are looking for would seem to be a track log that contains multiple track segments. Something that is supported by the gpx schema and a lot of desktop based mapping software but not, as a rule, on-line mapping tools.

Just to see what would happen I just uploaded a three part track to bikely and, as expected, it imported the first segment and ignored the other two. So, if the aim is to get bikely to design and display such a track, the answer to your question would be no.

However, if you want to create a track for use with other software or a gps, you could use bikely to design the individual segments as separate tracks and stitch them together using other software or even a text editor.

    Hope this helps.

Ah, thanks, redfox! It does indeed help; at least, it helps me understand what's happening even as it points out how I will not be able to accomplish what I would like to do. Ah well, life as we know it.

One way of doing this that I've used is to plot the trunk route first and note the distance. Annotate the starting point with a note that says the distance for the trunk route is xxx km without side trips. Then go back to the route and add points for the side trips. At each turn off the trunk to a side attraction, annotate the turn with "for trunk route, go straight, for a short trip to the waterfall, turn Right here". This may not be ideal, yet does have a few benefits -- the trunk route distance is known, the turns off the trunk are clearly marked, and the length of each side trip can be seen by looking at the length of the segment(s) off the trunk.
