    Hello folks

I'm very pleased to say that we have Jules Szemere back working on Bikely development.

The first thing Jules is tackling is the problem of making our GPX files compatible with Garmin GPS devices.

Over on our beta test site, http://mud.bikely.com we now have a working version of this.

Share > Download GPX should now give you a gpx file that will open in Mapsource and load to a Garmin device.

IE users may have to rename the downloaded .xml to .gpx. We're working on a fix for that little IE quirk too.

Once we're sure it's working, we'll roll this over to the main site.

Please be aware that there are no guarantees that we won't wipe or update the route database on mud.bikely.com at some point, so if you want to keep your route, copy it to www.bikely.com. />
    Thanks

    Great!!
Noticed a bug in the MUD GPX export, the cue sheet notes (& maybe names) are missing

We've preserved cue sheet notes and names as waypoints, because Garmin doesn't seem to like anything in the trackpoint list but geographical data.

Can you give me a URL for the route you're testing please so i can see what happens when I load it into MapSource.

Ditto for all bug reports - the more detail, the better.

Can you please try that for us again? It should now have all your waypoints.
  4.
GPX files should now download with .gpx suffix on IE from mud.bikely.com too
  5.
This appears to be in the production version now.
Thanks for fixing it, Bikely is a lot nicer than MapSource for plotting new rides.

One more really useful feature would be to generate a Route comprising the named waypoints as well as the track with all the intermediate points on it.
MapSource can generate a route from selected waypoints, but sorts the waypoints alphabetically so you then have to put them back in the correct order to get a useful route.

so does it now let you follow a route if i download a gpx file from here and put it on my 705? or if you go of route does it point you straght to the end or the next waypoint?

    Thanks in advance

If you have routable maps installed, a Garmin 705 should give directions with a route downloaded from here. That's certainly how it works on mine.

Let us know how you get on!

I just purchase a 705 last night. I am new to the Bike GPS world.
What do you mean by routable maps?
  7.
    John,

I have a new Garmin 705 and I have been able to download the .crs files from MapMyRide, but I have not been able to do so with bikery. I will download the .gpx to file, but I can't import it to the Garmin Course file. When I try to import the GXP file my computer will not recognize or read it. Is there another way to do this?

    Thanks,

Routable maps are ones that contain information about how roads connect, so that a GPS device or mapping software on your computer can calculate a route along the roads. Garmin sells such maps on SD card for various territories. There's one for Australia, for example, and one for the whole of Europe.

They are also available bundled with the 705, which is the cheapest way to get them, and they are far better than the 'base map' that comes with the unit.

When you attach a 705 to your computer a new drive appears (two if you have an SD card in the device). On a typical PC They will be drive letters E and F, and the lower one will be called GARMIN.

Look inside it and you'll find another folder called Garmin and in there a GPX folder.

Put your downloaded GPX file in there. The path will probably be E:\Garmin\GPX

If you're using a Mac, let me know and I'll find out what happens on Macs.

Unmount the 705 from your computer

Once you have the GPX in your 705, turn it on as usual, let it go through its satellite-finding sequence

    Click the Menu button

    Choose 'Where to'

    Choose 'Saved Rides'

Pick the route you want to follow and you're away

On the Macintosh, my Garmin 605 mounts two volumes, one for the GPS unit itself, and one for the SD card with my maps in it. You can copy the files to the proper location using the finder with no issues. I'll be testing this on my 605 tomorrow before I head out on a camping trip.

I tried to do this with files saved to GPX on the regular Bikely pages, but although I could put the gpx files onto my Garmin 705, it didn't run the route (although it showed up under "Saved routes"). Now reading this thread I'm guessing the files were not compatible. I'll try it again!

    Thanks, I love Bikely!

Does anyone know when Garmin compatible files will be available on the regular Bikely site? When I save into GPX it shows up on my Garmin (after putting it into the appropriate file), but it doesn't work properly.

Our GPX files work with the Edge 705 under our testing.

Can you please describe in detail exactly how you are transferring them to your Edge and how you are then attempting to use them.

It may be that you need a routable map on your Edge to get the directions at junctions to work.

I have a plugin map card for North America. I save the GPX file onto my desk top, and attach the Garmin. The two Garmin drives appear on my Mac desktop (the Garmin and the card). I put the GPX file into the GPX folders on the drives on the desktop. When I detach the Garmin they appear on the Garmin under saved routes. But then when I attempt to navigate the route, the route says that it loads to 100% but then just "sits" there. Maybe I'm doing something obviously dumb.

You need to press 'start/stop' to let it know that you're under way.

Thanks! Who would have thunk it?
